maybe you guys need some motivation for the new site?

i already coded a bit offline on my PC so things go faster when we have a name and domain. already working:

+ website is based on mediawiki cos i run another site with it and am pretty experienced with the administration. besides that it's a good solution for user rights management + content management.

+ users can register (they can't edit website pages). user profiles, e-mail and what not.

+ DJ's will be added to a "DJ" user group so they have more rights like editing / deleting website pages. it's necessary that DJ's do some "work" like editing help pages, etc. can't do everything alone.

+ fully integrated forum system. better than discogs forums. fully adjustable. different forums like General Help and Chat, smilies, user avatars, quote, edit posts, own forum search. normal registered users can also post. restricted forum section for DJ's and forum admins. forum admin will be mika so he can add forum mods (those can edit other posts, delete threads, make stickies, announcements etc). the forum system looks like this, just with less forums.

+ a real schedule integrated in a calendar function (see screenshot below). each stream (atm still called event) by a DJ is an own page. DJ's can add scheduled events, delete them if not able to stream or add past events if spontaneous. all this results in a fully automated archive of past streams. easy to handle for adding playlists later etc. lists of the dj's past streams etc. full content management :)

+ everything from radiogs.com can be integrated to the new website. to get an idea, here's a screenshot

+ auto ripping on server. (atm with "Stream Ripper" proggy not always working + 1 listener in stats, will try to find a good script). DJ's (not normal users / visitors) will be able to see the rip folder with the fresh and old files on the server via the website. It's only to be able to download your stream or upload on a file hoster etc. not to storage or archive them for ever. We should discuss if we want this and if yes how to handle it. E.g. delete files older than 1 week or always keep the freshest 5 GB etc. If I find a good script I will enable deleting options for the DJ's so you can delete your set right after the stream in case you don't want to have it available for the other DJ's.

+ user rights. for example i will make mika a site admin so he can do things others can't.

+ only more to come. atm i change the skin so it doesn't look like wikipedia ;)

  • MON-K over 10 years ago

hehe. that's onyl the beginning. if you have ideas feel free to post
  • Vinylmania-c over 10 years ago

Dj's can add their own photos in their profile I suppose? :)

We will fill those 5 GB faster than ever done before. :)
Maybe a timelimited d/l possibility? Is it possible? Let's say a 30 days chance to d/l a set then it's erased?
  • Vinylmania-c over 10 years ago

    Or a 10 set limit?
Your set is stored but not more than 10 in a row. When 11th set is saved the first one goes.
  • Vinylmania-c over 10 years ago

    Or by date as above....
  • MON-K over 10 years ago

MON-K edited over 10 years ago
yes there's an upload funtion so you can uplaod images and put them on any page you want it like your user profile.

rips: limiting the stored ammount can mess up things.
i'm in favour with these rock solid rules: delete every file older than 4 weeks + delete oldest file if folder is filled with 5GB (which is enough) so it still rips new sets 100%

again: only Users in the user group "DJ" will have the right to acces the rips page.
  • djcatfood over 10 years ago

well done monk. let me know what i can do to perform "janitor" functions, i.e. clean up, edit pages, etc.

i discussed archiving mixes w/mika. i like the idea of archiving each djs mixes. then you have access to the djs, not just the latest rips. some stream more often that others, so "last 5 gB" would bias towards those folks. some space limitation would need to be in place, but it should not be a problem. how much archive space were you thinking of dedicating?
  • djcatfood over 10 years ago

disregard the storage question. i need 2lrn2read
  • fistondub over 10 years ago

just another thing regards to the name
therefore when i type in "Jack" on google i get this : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=jack

    jack radio : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=jack+radio

    radio : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=radio

...to be meditated too. Referencing. for more listeners, being referenced on others blogs/forums, musical ones is also a key to the success.

  • Stormbringer over 10 years ago

I just want to say that I'm following the discussion and I'm happy to see that you are trying to do something to get more listeners now when the Discogs forums are dying.

I don't have anything to add regarding the domain/name of the station for the moment, but I think something short and catchy is best.

I've spoken with Vinylmania-c about how to get more listeners in the past and I think the most important thing is to have either sceduled shows at a certain time every week or music all the time even if it's just a pre-recorded stream when no dj streams live.

    Good work MONK!

crap ;) requires re-encoding the incoming data. too much server load. and the stream can played on all players anyway so why encode to wmv or rm?

Inter something could be right....I thought about it when seeing the Interstate FM listed... we are actually a bunch of music freaks from all over the globe that will be DJ on this webradio .... I suggest we use this as a guidance + the IMPORTANT fact that many shows will be LIVE DJ's
  • Qpchan over 10 years ago

I don't think a style/genre of music name should be used in the radio name itself..."funk" in the name will misslead ppl...

"funk in the name will misslead ppl..." NAH! Surely when you use "Funk Radio". but not at "Gorilla Funk". You think DJ Funk plays funk? ;)

inter is cool yep. but Inter City sounds too normal and like Inner City
I agree with old school FM but it often sounds better!
Interstate FM sounds better than Interstate Radio. Interstate reminds me of Detroit which is nothing bad

    Global Gorillas. Gorilla Funk!

    Interstate FM then...

gorilla remind me of Gorillaz & i don't like it... but just my point of view..

These are my candidates right now.

    1. Interstate FM - Todays technique with oldschool vibes.
    2. Intercity Radio /Inter City Radio - Also todays technique with oldschool vibes.
    3. WBMX - But what does it mean? It must mean something. "Worlds B-MiXers"? ;) "Webs Best Music traX"?
    4. Dirty Vinyl FM (or whatever) - "Dirty" can mean it's a CD or whatever. :)
    5. 99.9 - Ninetyninepointnine. "Radio 99.9", "99.9 Internet/FM" or whatever.

The name of the station must fit well in your mouths too. Speak them up! :)

Next minute my list may look totally different again. ;)
    This is hard.
I also think a neutral but catchy name would be the best.
    Nothing with styles.

"Dirty House" can be anything except music before house. :-/
"Dirty Funk" is Soul to techno or what ever. But naah...

I also still like jacknchill because it could be anything between chilly and party. But the above list stays this far.

Then I like numbers. "99.9" is easy to say, easy to remember and easy to write. Says nothing but still attracts, or does it?

This may be my final votes.
I'm off for a whiles vacation. No internet connection available. Back To The Caveman's Life. :)
    I'll check in Tuesday again.

aka_dmsr had a radio show each saturdays a few years back on a FM Radio call FMR (in Toulouse). His show was called Liquid Sky they even had a logo for it (inspired from the movie)
let me ask him, but it sounds really cool for a webradio..

The gorilla was a joke from me because I can imagine some gentlemen here may have hard to pronounce guerilla and may say something "gorilla sounding".

Ok, I'm down to 2 names now.

    1. Interstate FM - Todays technique with oldschool vibes.
    2. Intercity Radio /Inter City Radio - Also todays technique with oldschool vibes.

I also like subfrequency. Only thing is it's hard to spell and say.
  • MON-K over 10 years ago

yes and subfrequency would fall back on me.

i till think inter city has no cool touch.
guerilla funk? looks bad. gorilla looks more simple and is proper english.

so Gorilla Funk or Interstate FM for me.

Gorilla Funk is more unserious but stylish
    Interstate FM sounds more serious

i'd rather go for the subfrequency , administrated by subfader, that makes sense in some way too. it is not that ridiculous.

or gorrila/guerilla funk - i also think it needs more opinions from other people at this stage.
A whole context is also important sch as a strong afirmation of a designed logo. it seems easier to imagine an army designed logo with guerilla funk or a sinusoidal logo with subfrequency than any logo under interstate imo. strong image. remember Plastikman?
