So many people use words like “key element” or “link” when when it comes to Joe Henderson, suggesting that the man is just part of the jazz chain, a man who never found mass appeal, or a solid audience for that matter. Joe wasn’t just a “key element” in the tenor saxophone chain, and no, he may not have been as popular as say Wayne Shorter, but just because after more than three decades critics couldn’t seem to find a place to comfortably pigeon-hole his artist, is no reason to consider him a mere dot on a line. Other jazz artists certainly respected his introspective and innovative ideas, drawing deeply from the man’s pioneering attitude when it came to the advant garde, electronic jazz, fusion, funk, and his founding efforts in laying down bluesy vocals over all of these.

Henderson was ground breaking, though I’m sure that even Blue Note Records was a bit dismayed by the fact that he was achieving so little success, when he was directly responsible for so much, for so many, lending his talents as a sideman to an endless list who would go on to shape the jazz world. Listening to Henderson is like viewing Joan Miró, both artists who’s work is better viewed from a distance, without concentration, with those “Ah-Ha” moments coming long after Joe has put away his sax, the house likes have come up, and you’re able to hear mere memories of what you’d just experienced, thinking “Man, that was good.”

Opening this boxed set is like opening a window, or a chapter in a book you’ve somehow missed. The Milestone Years will soar you to dizzying heights, breathe fresh air into your lungs, and show you a new way of using a key you thought you’d understood all to well. There’s no way I’d challenge you to sit down and dig all you find here, thought I will suggest that while listening, you find something to do that requires an empty head, and let Joe fill it.
