I still listen to old Led Zeppelin albums from time to time and I think they still sound great. This album, on the other hand, is something that I was eager to hear when it came out but its not an album that I have really ever gone back to in later years. With the exception of Robert Plant songs like 'Far Post' (a RP contribution to the soundtrack of the film 'White Nights' in 1985) & 'Network News' (from the RP album Fate of Nations in 1993) I think Robert Plant's solo career was a bust. The main problem being that he didn't get with any guitarists who were truly notable after Led Zep ended in 1980. Robbie Blunt, the guitarist on this album- was an "OK" player but I think he didn't possess anywhere near the same level of talent as a rock guitarist like Jimmy Page. When I saw the 'Pictures at Eleven' tour I was not impressed by the band Robert had put together. Phil Collins drumming on one song-Cozy Powell on another-the band lacked a definitive sound. This album was a major let down for many rock fans. I would think that Robert Plant of all people would have realized that if he was going to go on tour after Led Zeppelin had ended it was going to have to be something really good. I didn't think this was a good enough project for him. The album often sounds forced/contrived and its not one of the ones I reach for when I need 'a shot of decent rock.' File under 'side projects.'

The year is 1982. Led Zeppelin are now a Rock n Roll memory and Robert releases his first solo LP. If you bought this in a store, what would you be thinking on the way home? Will it give me more of the Zeppelin vibe? Well, no actually. Plant was careful not to copy his old band and the material here is fresh and mature with it's own sound. The drums are big, with Phil Collins tacking six of the eight album tracks and Cozy Powell playing on the other two. The tracks are loud but the guitars, played by Robbie Blunt are pretty much clean throughout, but liquid smooth and elastic. So it's no 'Whole Lotta Love' I'm afraid. Then again, Plant had very well done everything with Zeppelin up to their last LP. This does not try to continue where Zeppelin left off but it does attempt to take a new direction with Plant firmly in control. On first listen it passes by without much fuss, in fact I was waiting for he 'golden moment' but there is no grand climax in this album but on further listening the nuggets are there but subtle. You may feel you have heard all this before, but try find another vocalist as compelling as Plant and then you're going to be trying. This is the sound of a well-travelled man from a legendary rock band starting from scratch but setting the controls with extreme skill. It's not an album to rock to buy an album you rock with on a higher plane. Who knows it may have been part of the sound of Zeppelin had they carried on but that's just talk. Pictures At Eleven is indeed art. Art of the gods at that. (Alan Murray April 21, 2015)
