Andrew Davis and Tomar Hoffs must have been CTI enthusiasts to have signed on David Matthews and his entire crew to do the movie's score. Sure, the movie's about a Chicago band but Matthews' NYC funky fusion fits right into the grit of the Windy City. Most of the tunes have David Sanborn's alto chops and fluttering contrast to Hiram Bullock's cozy riffing in the forefront, nothing alien to Matthews' productions for the aforementioned label. Some tracks given the era delightfully sound a little game showish like "Back to the Business" and I'm not even sure the sharp violin-led Gangster City ever made it into the movie in its entirety. The rest of the material is straight from the Stony Island Band featured in the movie -- and it's all very marketable R&B, even rolls over into gospel. The jubliant "Party Lights" likely would have been the band's charttopper. I'd swear a few numbers weren't featured on the LP, maybe it's the desire for more of Matthews' jams.
