Though their lineup was frequently wavering, The Drifters were one of the most influential early doo-wop and R&B acts of all time. They began in the early-‘50s when soul singer Clyde McPhatter put the band together as his backing group. McPhatter would eventually leave, allowing Ben E. King to assume the lead role, ushering the group into their most iconic phase. They would score massive pop hits during the early-'60s, and though The Drifters' commercial star dimmed in the ‘70s, the band has remained a touring draw well into the 21st century. The Drifters' ever-evolving lineup doubtlessly kept their sound fresh and exciting, and this is nowhere more evident than in their motley album cuts. The classic swing and choral falsetto of “Drip Drop” dances alongside the lush pop orchestration and mellow Ben E. King vocals of “I Count the Tears,” while the group show off their doo-wop cred and vocal chops on the dreamy “Adorable.” The Drifters' exquisite, trademark vocal blending and soaring orchestration lend themselves as beautifully to their chart-topping hits as their lesser-known cuts. Their doo-wop and R&B roots are in full attendance, but here they also delve into gospel sounds on the tambourine-laced “Lonely Winds,” dreamy festive odes on “The Bells of St. Mary's,” and tender balladry on “I Don't Want to Go On Without You.”
