This is definitely an odd one. They were going for optimal sound quality spreading the music across two records at 45 RPM, but at the same time it's a freakin' picture disc, which audiophiles typically avoid like the plague. It indeed sounds worlds better than this 2008 pressing https://www.discogs.com/Wolf-Parade-At-Mount-Zoomer/release/1378501, but you have to live with the incessant whoosh created by the picture layer, which is thankfully only really audible between tracks. The packaging is really weird too. Basically a folded 12x12" artwork insert on top of a double clear plastic sleeve housing the two pic discs. All told, I'm really happy with it, TBH.

Finally broke down and picked one of these up, mostly because the standard vinyl sounded so lifeless and dull to me. I was hoping the fact that this was 45rpm, and therefore had to be a different cut which could hopefully give the songs more room to breathe, would be a better sounding pressing - even though it is a picture disc, which I usually avoid like the plague due to surface noise issues.

All I can say is wow, this sounds so much better than the 33rpm press, it's not even close. The mastering on this is so much punchier and dynamic with a much wider soundstage. The only obvious negative of this press is that it does have a very loud noise-floor in between tracks and during quieter passages, but this album is mostly rocking the entire time, so I can easily look past it and don't notice it for 95% of the album.

If Wolf Parade is one of your favorite bands and you care about superior mastering and dynamics, this is worth every penny. Plus it doesn't hurt that it's a very limited version of Mount Zoomer that is likely to hold its value (unless Free News Projects finds the rest of the copies that weren't released, because there is no way 1500 made it out into the wild).
