DJ K30* / DJ NinOo / Puto Anderson - Firma do Txiga soulchap

9 ottobre 2017
From the label:

Txiga means something like "come close" and that takes us right into the heart of the matter. Although especially apparent in the tarraxo style they are so connected to, the expression reveals unbounded enthusiasm for music, taken from the roots up, wherever the feeling projects it to. And so we felt this crew had to come across in a special way. Three seven inch records, one for each of the main producers (Wayne is kept as a reserve), represent three branches of the same tree.

The 4 tracks produced by K30 explore a more synthetic approach to the syncopated PALOP sound of the streets, a sort of avant-garde technoid expression of the batida identity. Sparse atmospheres, exotic percussion punches and something of a minimalist nature. "Melodias Do K30" bring in more drama but also a casual production method assumed as such - check the false ending.

OK, DJ NinOo, with ondulating Oo's and that's exactly what it feels like when you get to the end of the spacey, romantic "Ambientes Leves", an outstanding slow jam guaranteed to keep those rainy days happy. The extra heavy bassline pairs up with circular synth waves for a sweet and sour atmosphere nothing else than unique. Then comes "Saudades Do Russel", a loving dedication in house tempo and sporting a complex, nostalgic keys workout.

We chose two old cuts by Puto Anderson that might seem to limit the perspective regarding his production, but these actually push us back to the sort of raw ground zero where the whole batida substance has evolved from. Heavy, minimal, aggressive and happy in a way most os us can only try to grasp. The relentless, gritty groove on both tracks comes from another era to fall flat on the centre of the dancefloor and keep things tight.

I love this album. It should be getting more attention. Very witty. Devil Horns is brilliant. I recommend seeking this out.

It's interesting that there are 3 Rolling Stones covers in this set. Supposedly, the "New Wave" were rejecting Classic Rock dinosaurs (of the previous fifteen years); but they were clearly interested in their roots, too.
This is an incredible box set. Another fine feather in the Numero cap. But I woukd have liked to have seen some documentation, which they do so well.

Big Dipper - Joke Outfit soulchap

16 aprile 2014
Big Dipper offers sound advice on romance and investing with its limited release picture sleeve 45 to celebrate Record Store Day 2013. It's the only place to get the vinyl versions of two new Dipper essentials, "Joke Outfit" and "Market Scare", previously released on their 2012 CD, Crashes on the Platinum Planet. The ever value-conscious Dippers are also throwing in collage art by Robert Pollard, so it's a win-win-win proposition for the thrifty vinyl consumer.

Various - Warfaring Strangers: Darkscorch Canticles soulchap

18 gennaio 2014
With Warfaring Strangers: Darkscorch Canticles, the impacts of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath on US shores and heartlands is revealed as a bludgeoning previously undescribed. In this collection, medieval Bonham thunk and febrile Iommi guitar leads crowd out the bluesy Americana that foregrounded those bands, replacing hippie pastoralism with mythology, armored conflict, sorcery, and doom. From legions of occult-obsessive 1970s bonehead teens, we summoned a horde of 16 bands, cloaked in eons of tortured obscurity, whose sole release amounts to a blistering chapter ripped free of rock’s lumbering mythos. This music hails from an occluded realm, somewhere just beyond the pot-addled minds of its creators. Lyrically, the Darkscorch Canticles trifle with themes most grave: crippling fear, pagan hostility, paranoia, power addiction—even necromancy. Satan’s name is openly invoked, alongside Sauron’s. These worried, warlike Canticles occupy a miniscule niche in the American underground of self-released rock, but their appeal is more broad today than in any previous era.
One year ago, Medusa’s mysterious First Step Beyond LP emerged from its Chicago forge, numbered in gold, sheathed in the black faux-velvet of a centaur’s nutsack, heralding The Numero Group’s first dive into the Stygian caverns of the American hard rock underground. But Darkscorch Canticles hail from no simple aural landscape: Numero 048 melds amateur D&D artwork with stout chunks of stoner basement rock, grafting physical music artifacts into an imagined world. In both LP and CD formats, eye-crushing band logos dominate the cover in false pen ink, all of it ensconced in an embossed Wibalin weave, foil-stamped by licks from the fire-lake of Eldara.

Various - Titan: It's All Pop soulchap

18 gennaio 2014
Seminal sounds from the Kansas City scene of the late 70s -- a wealth of power pop work from the tiny Titan label -- all brought together in one of the most brilliant packages we've ever seen from the Numero Group! Like most Numero releases, there's a great story behind this set -- a tale of bounced checks, interstate culture, and a cadre of great groups who would have been huge -- had they recorded this music out on the coast! Titan's way more than just a tiny label that managed to put out some killer singles back in the day -- it's a pop powerhouse that shows just how much under-discovered genius the American scene can hold -- music that really helps break down simple understandings of late 70s rock, especially when presented this well. The 2CD set features 42 tracks and a 40 page booklet -- a great counterpart to Numero's Yellow Pills set -- filled with notes on Titan, a complete discography, and a wealth of wonderful photos that really make this unique scene come alive. Titles include "Shark" and "Real Life Saver" by Gary Charlson, "No Way Baby" and "I Wanna Be" by Arlis, "It's Your Heart Tonight" and "Radio Heart" by Secrets, "Please Change Your Mind" and "Baby It's You" by Boys, "Rock N Roll Song" and "Radio City" by Bobby Sky, "The Last Song" by JP McClain & The Intruders, "Cry" and "Didn't Like It Anyway" by Gems, "Coit Tower" and "Drink A Toast" by Millionaire At Midnight, and "I Think About You" by Scott McCarl.

Saboten - Floor Et Satie as reviewed by soulchap

I can recommend this compilation very highly to anyone with tastes that run to female-led post-punk outfits such as Raincoats, Au Pairs, Kleenex, etc. The Erik Satie material here is very much in their own style, rather than any sort of traditional performance of his work. The playing here is tighter than that of many of the aforementioned groups; these women are confident and capable of pushing the boundaries of Pop Music just that amount farther to make them essential, if late-coming to my attention, members of the Post-Punk canon.

Radical Cemetery - N.N.E. as reviewed by soulchap

2 giugno 2013
Ed. of 150
Slow gauze of eternal hypo-presence is the ultimate microwave ooze that settles post-plastic baking. Seems this vibe was in the thick air of the basement Radical Cemetery laid this set of tunes down in, a murky, deeply retro-active wormhole where deposits of alkaline and asbestos brew in a coldrun of familiarity. Lurking in the shadows of doom sludge, "N.N.E." represents a wholly defiant concoction, as indebted to the harsh realities of "Dopesmoker," as it is the sentient mist of a screwed free jazz.
