The Originals second Motown release, The Portrait of the Originals, contained the hit singles, "The Bells" and "I Like Your Style". The album has great moments, so CP Spencer, Hank Dixon, Freddie Gorman, and Walter Gaines doesn't disappoint. The album showed the groups versatility and crossover appeal that sometimes came off as dull. Here's a track by track annotation:
Side A:
1. The Bells (*****) The Originals sexy and sensual follow up to "Baby I'm For Real". All members of the group take lead on this classic Motown hit.
2. I Like Your Style (*****) The B-side of "We Can Make It Baby", written by the group and is catchy and it should've been a much bigger hit, especially on the R&B charts.
3. There's A Place We'd Like to Know (****) A beautiful ballad that spotlights Freddie Gornan's beautiful baritone. It's a wonder that it was not included in any Originals compilation yet.
4. You May Not Like The Change (****) A song traditional to the late-Motown sound of the 60s. Definitely another standout.
5. Don't Stop Now (*****) Even though it's not a hit or a single, this song is among the Originals most popular songs. Freddie Gorman leads this one.
6. Since I Fell For You (***1/2) Beginning with a 4part harmony, and the torch passes to Hank Dixon and then to CP Spencer (who to me is the leader of the group, or standout). Very Doo-wop in the vein of "Baby I'm For Real".
Side B:
1. Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (The Flesh Failure) (****) This bouncy cover made famous from the play Hair; is a average cover but the Originals pull it off.
2. You Want Hearts and Flowers (***) A nice track
3. Just Another Morning (***) A cover of Michael Denton (Rare Earth artist) single, a pop oriented track.
4. Wichita Lineman (***) A cover of the Glenn Campbell hit. A good cover.
5. I'll Wait for You (*****) Marvin Gaye produced track, (you can practically hear Marvin singing), another standout on the album. A Hank Dixon spotlight.
6. My Way (**1/2) A cover of the Frank Sinatra standard.
Originals fans grab a copy of this LP, I would give this LP a 4!! Excellent group with excellent vocals!
