Stanley Turrentine – Salt Song

One of the few remaining "budget" jazz gems from the golden CTI/Blue Note/Impulse!/Dutchman era. This was an unexpectedly superb album for me and it's definitely one of Turrentine's best. "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" is perhaps the weakest point, but it works in context of the album. Side A is just monumental and full of surprises. Eric Gale's work may just be the highlight of the album, and Ron Carter and Billy Cobham sprinkle their little bits of genius to make everything pop way more than one would expect. Turrentine is somewhat outshined by the ensemble, but his humility is really beautiful here.

I am also skeptical of Turrentine albums due to their hit and miss like pdmcdonald’s review stated, but this is a killer album with great playing and great grooves. Highly recommend!

Of all the seventies jazz/funk artists Turrentine is definitely the most hit and miss. Some great tracks surrounded by a lot off dross. This album is however one of his best. Gibraltar is a superb example of laid back jazz/funk . Storm and Salt song are also strong tracks

Finding a $0.50 record usually doesn’t leave me anticipating much usually, and when you find an amazing album by accident it is that much better. Great music that takes you for a ride. Awesome

A must for any fan of early CTI records/cds. This album grooves very nicely with a subtle funkiness. The opening track Gibraltar has Stanley soloing with an ensemble in mind and plays sweet and soulfully without coming across as a mentor for smooth jazz. Eric Gales playing on the opening number is also worthy of mention utilizing arpeggiated chords, octaves and soloing with sheer angelic beauty. Not a bad track on this a Rudy Van Gelder produced gem. One last thing about this recording that makes it all the more special aside from Gales contribution you have Billy Cobham and Ron Carter as a titanium atomically tight rhythmic backbone something that definitely is worth checking out!
