Pat Metheny w/ Charlie Haden & Billy Higgins – Rejoicing

Sounds really good. Very ECM sounding with lots of air and dynamics.

Pat Metheny trio and love letter to Ornette, "Rejoicing" is a very satisfying guitar album. Here Pat teams up with Coleman alumni Haden and Higgins. What's not to like? They dip a toe into free jazz (see "Rejoicing", the track) without fully committing. That will come later. Side B introduces Pat's Roland GR-300 guitar synth, and IMO, I can skip that side altogether. It's just harsh sounding.

"Lonely Woman" is the showpiece here, gorgeous and stirring. Ironic that Pat created an album of Ornette covers, and then chooses Horace Silver's "Lonely Woman", not Coleman's "Lonely Woman". I think we bein' punked. "Tears "Inside" is a marvelous blues with some great choruses by Pat.

Audio quality is decent, though not memorable. The mix suffers a little. Pat's guitar is very dark and barky. I don't find a lot of dynamics in this master. Drums are clean with a nice thumpy kick.

3.5 stars.

This is some of the finest playing ever in my opinion. Definitely one of my top 10 desert island records.

not sure about the album though, alot of these ecm albums leave alot to be desired musically

B-side for a climactic ECM finish. Methany, Haden and HIggins really finish this record out with the maximum potential of this era's artful integrity, and recapitulate the free-form Jazz of yesteryear. Have to wait for it, but def there.

I'm sure that Warner Bros. is the label. And in this case Warner Bros. Records mast be in the Label/Catalog number field as sub-label instead repeated ECM. And I'm sure that Warner not only distributor but MANUFACTURER (as this written on every US ECM issue cover and labels if you would read attentively).
