I’ve loved ‘Deserts’ and ‘Poem Electronique’ for many years but for some reason I couldn’t really get into Varese’s orchestral works before I found this. The only performances I had were on ‘The Varese Album’, recorded by the Columbia Symphony Orchestra in some cavernous hall I can’t recall the name of, and the force and impact of these seminal pieces seemed somehow dissipated. However, the acoustics on this (I guess authoritative) release couldn’t be more different; dry, loud, rude and in your face, as they should be. These versions converted me. As for the cherry red wax, that’s just a bonus. Well worth picking up if you can.

The Interpolations from Déserts do not appear on the original EMS 401 release. Much more problematic is that the Interpolations on this CD release only contain ONE channel of the stereo version. As a result, there are often silences, where you can just hear the sounds from the missing channel bleed through. It is an absolute scandal that these interpolations have been released in this incomplete form! Please listen to the Varèse Record on Finnadar Records (SR 9018) instead.

A rather strange release. The electronic interpolations from Déserts were not on the original EMS release. Furthermore the interpolations on this release are completely useless, as they only let you hear one channel of the stereophonic interpolations!
