Exile on Main St. is the tenth British and twelfth American studio album by the English rock band The Rolling Stones, released on 12 May 1972 by Rolling Stones Records. Recording began in 1969 in England during sessions for Sticky Fingers and continued in mid-1971 at a rented villa in the South of France named Nellcôte while the band lived abroad as tax exiles.

Performed by:
Mick Jagger – lead vocals, backing vocals; harmonica (on "Shake Your Hips", "Sweet Virginia", "Sweet Black Angel", "Turd on the Run" and "Stop Breaking Down"); electric guitar (on "Tumbling Dice" and "Stop Breaking Down")
Keith Richards – guitars, backing vocals; bass guitar (on "Casino Boogie", "Happy" and "Soul Survivor"); electric piano (on "I Just Want to See His Face"); lead vocals (on "Happy")
Mick Taylor – guitars (on all but "Tumbling Dice", "Torn and Frayed" and "Happy"); bass guitar (on "Tumbling Dice", "Torn and Frayed", "I Just Want to See His Face" and "Shine a Light")
Charlie Watts – drums (on all tracks except "Tumbling Dice" (outro), "Happy" and "Shine a Light")
Bill Wyman – bass guitar (on "Rocks Off", "Shake Your Hips", "Sweet Virginia", "Sweet Black Angel", "Loving Cup", "Ventilator Blues", "Let It Loose" and "Stop Breaking Down")

The original release came in a unipak gatefold sleeve with a 12 postcard set inside the jacket. They feature images of 4 members of the band, a short movie in pictures. Bill Wyman was not present at the session, his head is copied into the pictures.

      A piece of musical history is right in my hands! Even though the records are 53 years old, they are great. A perfectly deadquiet mass of vinyl, very weighty for those years. But most importantly, it's an authentic sound that hasn't been remastered or compressed. That's how you want to listen to this incredible album-the mood. Raw, perky, dashing. A set of postcards, original inners and a Japanese inner. Of the cons, I would only mention minor errors in the lyrics in the booklet. Do not hesitate, take it boldly, you will not go wrong with this pressing .

        Found a UK first press in a local stores "clearance" section just before Christmas!!! No postcards and sleeve is "good" whilst inner sleeves and vinyls are VG+ - amazed at the sound quality compared to my previous copies (2010 and a half speed master), both of which sounded dull, muddy and lifeless compared to this first press.
        If you see a copy - grab it!!! You won't be disappointed

            This pressing is quite good. The low and high frequencies are well extended, and it has a lot of energy. In "Rip This Joint," the sound tends to be somewhat muffled, but that also enhances the charm of this album. If you're looking for impact in this album, this pressing is definitely the one. I think it competes well with the Artisan pressing. Which one to buy is up to your preference.

                I can’t confirm drbryants assertion, I have not heard very many pressings of Exile. I do agree with drbryant and others that do not feel the pressing is very good. In fact I remember calling up the mail order company I bought it from and complaining about the sound. I got the usual “ it was a muddy mix to begin with. Keith .. .” Then I discovered my Amplifier was only playing out of one speaker and I just chalked it up to that. All these years later I admit it’s not the best pressing out there. It is better than some others I’ve heard and certainly better then the 2010.

                        A sprawling, weary double album encompassing rock & roll, blues, soul, and country that takes a while to absorb but this rich and masterful set listen reveals something new w/ each subsequent spin. Generally regarded as one of the Stones' best records w/ its series of dark dense jams that sets a remarkably high standard for all of hard rock.
                        Absolutely essential and a must for any rock collection.
