Phillip Upchurch* – Darkness, Darkness

This is a wonderfull pressing of an amazing album. No clicks or pops. Great sonics. Highly recommended.

Not sure I've ever heard someone play guitar quite like Upchurch does on DARKNESS, DARKNESS...his solos are consistently unique and adventurous but always faithful to the melody, and he plays so soulfully in such a diverse range of styles. The band takes on several pop songs and transforms them into elegant, flowing grooves...highlights include the title track, "Cold Sweat", "Inner City Blues", and "You've Got A Friend"...check out Chuck Rainey on bass, mercy. This pressing sounds great, with rich organic depth to the low end, the drums are nice and crisp, and Upchurch's guitar is crystal clear. My copy is in fine shape, with just a few spots of very faint surface noise. Good stuff.

After Lovin' Feeling(which is a PU must have) this album takes Mr. Upchurch's smooth, slick funky jazzing to the next level of amazingly downtempo jazz realms. Serious proof that George Benson was spot on utilizing his Phil's experienced playing as a side man to support many of Benson's tours back in the hey day. This album is downtempo jazz perfection!

Such a killer record. It goes between jazz funk and blues, and all of it is pulled off amazingly. Good driving grooves, and Phil’s just playing his ass off the whole time. If you see one do not hesitate to pick one up!
