Erdenklang and its publishing company Erdenklang Musikverlag Ulrich Rützel (sometimes credited as Erdenklang Musikverlag) were founded by Ulrich Rützel in Hamburg in October 1981. The remarkable technological development of music computers during the 70s and 80s (Fairlight) instigated exciting new ways of sound design and computer aesthetics, and computer-acoustic music became Erdenklang's philosophy.
In an attempt to widen the musical spectrum and to move past the little innovative purely electronic styles Rützel launched his sub-label Cross Culture in 1989 with emphasis on more global/world music fusion styles. However, Cross Culture soon became rather an Edition on Erdenklang than being a separate label, similar to the Silent Beauty Edition. Silent Beauty, launched at around the same time, specialized more on New Age releases "guided by poetry and beauty". Rützel founded CCn'C Records (short for CrossCulture and Contemporary Music) in 1998 as successor of Erdenklang. After severe illness he sold all labels and his publishing company in 2005 to DA Music.
