Established on April 02, 1969 in London as a subsidiary of A & M, Inc. by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.
On the 3rd Jan 1990, following the acquisition of ultimate parent A & M, Inc. in 1989 by Polygram N.V.(PolyGram), the company was acquired by Saxontrack Plc (later known as Polygram (UK) Holdings Plc) a subsidiary company of Polygram International Holding BV.

On the 10th Dec 1998 A&M Records Ltd. ultimate parent Polygram NV is acquired by "The Seagram Co Ltd." and A&M Records Ltd. becomes part of the Universal Music Group.

As part of a UK group restructure on 1st Jan 2011, the company entered into a licence agreement, granting licence to all its revenue and rights under artist recording contacts in favour of Universal Music Operations Ltd., an affiliated company within the Universal Music Group.

A&M UK was reactivated as a frontline label in the UK in October 2006, the corresponding UK company is called A&M (UK) Ltd.
