I clearly remember when I wrote my comment some 9-10 years ago, going through a phase quite similar to what ThunderingMantis has described below and not really aligning with the scene, somewhat thinking that one day this may be my favourite label. With virtually all releases carefully curated and setting new standards in the drumfunk-y side of drum and bass, it's surely a great contender for the best label of the 2010s title.

Where do you even start with a label family like this? Beats me. No fillers on this imprint, just bangers and absolute bangers, I find it very unlikely it would disappoint anyone with a minor interest in drum and bass.

I discovered this label around 2010/2011 after a few years of not really feeling any new D&B that I was hearing, and losing interest in the genre. What a breath of fresh air! It was everything I was looking for in D&B at that time - breakbeat choppage, deep subs, cosmic pads. Essentially jungle at a D&B tempo, with more complex edits and more polished mixdowns/mastering, i.e. taking advantage of newer technology but staying true to the essence of the original jungle blueprint.

What I like about the tunes that these guys make most of all is that they will completely mangle the classic jungle breakbreats, but never to the point that the overall groove of the song is sacrificed, it never veers into breakcore territory. Their output is more varied than some give them credit for as well, it's not all amen break dancefloor destroyers, there are some really nice soulful/deeper/atmospheric cuts as well, and even a few non-jungle/D&B bits.

For me this is one of those labels that is 'buy on sight', I don't even need to listen to the previews to know that they are going to deliver the goods with each new release.

There so many massive records on Sci Wax & its sublabels, it's like opening a treasure chest.
One day I'll have the full set (almost there!). Every new Sci Wax release is an event and an instabuy for me.
Sci Wax and Subtle Audio restored my faith in interesting jungle/D&B and I'm a "Drumfunk" addict since that day.
Nebula, Dub-One, B-Key and of course Equinox are incredible on each release and gives the label his colour by being the most representated artists on Sci Wax(s). The other less "regular" artists provide excellent tracks and add to the whole cult status of these labels.
A Benchmark and a milestone for Jungle/D&B, and a Legendary label for sure.

£185 for a vinyl (SCI LIMITED 005) is just taking the piss. The scalpers are inflating the prices to beyond the absurd, and people paying over the odds shoulder the blame too. As the poster below has stated: wouldn't it be better for this money to be in the pockets of the artists and the label? - I for one would buy a lot of these if they were to get re-released - so come on Sci Wax people, make the cash while the demand is there! No one is suggesting you do a glut of a 1000, thus ruining the exclusivity, although I imagine on some releases that 1000 would sell out insantly... I'm looking at SCI LIMITED 003 :)

could do with represses, these guys should really be pressing twice as much in the initial runs, the artists would be the winners, not the carpet baggers. even so, i think the discogs sellers are being unrealistic, not sure why the amount of copies is so limited initially, if 250 represses of certain releases are made they are still going to be very exclusive. SW have to take some responsibility for these inflated prices. we all like to see records in our collections worth something and preferable more than we paid for but even so hopefully a bubble that will deflate a bit.

Why is this label so good?
It say's it on the label!
If you listen really closely you will hear/ear lots of samples of samples back when 1990/9192/93/94 Jungle Techno was so so wicked and still is!
And remember Jungle hardcore rave owes a massive debt to European Techno!
Yes the prices are super crazy!
And yes THIS label needs to repress.
But then again maybe they the owners wanted you to really hear the sound and THINK before YOU act.
It depends on how far you let your mind travel!

It seems this label and the retro sublabel are really going from strength to strength with every release. First heard about Sci Wax when I was given Dub One - King Operator at BM Soho to listen to. Copped it immediately and have gotten every release since. Each release is getting harder and harder to buy now though. I remember not too long ago when you could buy most of the back catalog on here for below £10 - £15 (and I wish I did!) but now it seems every single release is sought after and has the price tag to prove it. There are definitely a few here which could do with a repress. I can't see them having any problems with sitting stock.
