I.B.C. (International Broadcasting Company) was an independent and commercial radio broadcaster, founded by Leonard Plugge. The studios in 35 Portland Place were set up in the late 1950s to originally record radio broadcasts, but soon became a recording studio, hired by bands and labels. In 1962, Plugge sold the studios to BBC orchestra leader Eric Robinson (5) and musician George Clouston.

In July 1978, Chas Chandler, bassist of group The Animals and later music businessman, bought the I.B.C. Studios, renamed it Portland Recording Studios after its street address.

After running it for four years, in 1983 Chandler sold it to the controversial music impresario Don Arden (father of Sharon Osbourne, and father-in-law of Ozzy Osbourne), installing son David Arden (3) as manager for use by his Jet Records. In 1985 the building was sold and converted into offices.

Many great engineers/producers came out of this studio like Glyn Johns, Damon Lyon-Shaw, Andy Knight, Hugh Jones, Richard Mainwaring, and Andy Miller (4), who all worked on hundreds of famous records.
Some famous engineers that have worked at IBC include: Joe Meek, Denis Blackham (aka BilBo (3)), George Peckham (aka Porky (5)), Melvyn Abrahams.
Recording engineers: Allen Stagg, Eric Tomlinson, Adrian Kerridge, Jack Clegg, Keith Grant, James Lock (2), David Price, Ray Prickett, Terry Johnson (2), John Timperley, Glyn Johns, Alan Florence, Mike Claydon, Mike Weighell, John Pantry, Peter Robinson, Bryan Stott.
