History
EMI opened the studio in 1954, in addition to its existing studio and mastering/manufacturing facility at EMI Studios, Homebush, Sydney. By 1996, EMI had divested itself of its Sydney studios, with the Castlereagh St studio taken over by a management buy-out in that year. In 1998, the SAE Group of Companies bought the studio (under the Studios 301 banner), but from November 1999 moved all recording to new premises in Alexandria, Sydney (301 Studios, Sydney). Sydney mastering remained at the Castlereagh St premises from 1999 to 2006 (Studios 301, Sydney). From 2006, Sydney mastering was also moved to 301 Studios, Sydney in Alexandria.

Studios 301 also operated Australian recording and mastering studios at Studios 301, Byron Bay from 2002 to 2015.
Studios that have been located in the Castlereagh St premises since 2006 include REC Studios, Sydney, Level 7 Studios (2), and Benchmark Mastering from 2006 to 2012.

- For releases recorded in Australian "301" branded studios in 1999, please pay special attention to the recording location before choosing the relevant studio. This is because recording moved from Castlereagh St to Alexandria in November 1999. Use either this entity (EMI Studios 301) or 301 Studios, Sydney, depending on the identifying information.
- For releases recorded at Sydney "301" branded studios from November 1999, please use 301 Studios, Sydney.
- For releases recorded in Australian EMI studios prior to 1954, or such studios identifying the location as Homebush, please use EMI Studios, Homebush.
- For releases recorded in Australian EMI studios prior to 1992, but without any identifying location, please use EMI Studios Sydney.

Mastering
- For releases mastered at an EMI facility prior to 1978, please be careful about which studio to use (see below). Mastering of vinyl (and later CDs) happened at both the Homebush and Castlereagh St facilities, until the Homebush facility was closed in 1992, and its functions were moved to Silverwater. Mastering continued to occur at Castlereagh St until the move to Alexandria in 2006. The applicable location may also depend on the identity of the mastering engineer (e.g. Allan Parsons, who is generally understood to have worked at Homebush). Use EMI Studios Sydney if the location is unknown.
