Opened 15th of January 1964 in a former bank. The "Whisky A Go Go" was the first rock club in Los Angeles. Johnny Rivers, with backing musicians Eddie Rubin and Joe Osborn, was the very first artist to perform at the Whisky a Go Go, and became the initial house band. Since then the Whisky A Go Go has played host to rock 'n' roll's most important bands, from Alice Cooper, The Doors, Janis Joplin and Led Zeppelin to today's up and coming new artists.

The Club was founded by Elmer Valentine (1923-2008), a former policeman from Chicago.

"The Whisky" is a recording-venue for a lot of prominent live-albums.
