EMI's US CD manufacturing plant, located in Jacksonville, IL.
The Jacksonville, IL-based plant was opened on July 12, 1965 as Capitol Records Pressing Plant, Jacksonville and made compact discs as Capitol Jax starting in early 1987, after a $21 million conversion from vinyl records to CDs was completed by Capitol-EMI. Optical disc manufacturing continued as EMI Jax from March-October 1993 to the mid-90s, then as EMI MFG. until 2004, when EMI decided to outsource disc manufacturing to Cinram for the US. However, the facility was retained for use in distribution and warehousing.
The following SID codes were used by EMI Mfg.
Related Glass Master SID codes used:
· IFPI L043 (initially)
· IFPI L044 (and subsequently also)
These codes were not used by any predecessors/successors.
Related Mould SID codes:
· ifpi 16** (was also used by predecessor EMI Jax and following closure of the Jacksonville plant the ifpi 16** mould codes subsequently commenced being used by Cinram, Richmond, IN) in particular.
· ifpi 1F** (usually associated with Canadian releases)
· IFPI 6100 (seemingly indicates a disc replicated by Cinram, Richmond, IN after the closure of EMI Mfg.)
Note:
Associated Canadian CD pressing plant.
• A Canadian CD pressing (only) plant was built between Dec.1994 and Aug. 1995. It closed Feb 20, 2007.
- The name/location of this plant is currently unknown.
- It does not appear to have undertaken glass mastering.
- It appears that it primarily handled Canadian releases and the glass masters were done at EMI Mfg. Jacksonville
- A ‘CA’ is commonly included in the matrix string of these 1F** pressed releases.
- Mould SID used was 1F**
EMI Mfg. Indicators
The matrix will have a combination of the following distinguishing characteristics:
- Glass Mastering SID codes IFPI L043, IFPI L044.
- ‘EMI MFG’ is usually included in the matrix.
- Commonly includes a Matrix stamp in the n – n – n format. It is stamped on the label side and appears mirrored when the matrix is read from data side.
- Mould SID 16** usually found stamped in the Matrix band and usually uses a stylised presentation for ‘ifpi’
- Characterised by a ‘dark’ matrix area.
- The Cinram, Richmond, IN pressing SID 6100 appears in a small number of releases from some point in 2004.
LCCN credits:
For releases with a release date between 1994 and early 2005.
- Use “Glass Mastered at” credit for any IFPI L043, IFPI L044 cases.
- Can also include a “Pressed By” Cinram, Richmond, IN for IFPI 6100 cases.
- For ifpi 1F** cases, pending formal identification of the Canadian plant, cases should not be given any “Pressed By” credit.
- For ifpi 16** cases more generally a "Pressed By” credit should not be given as further research is required regarding use of these codes.
Also note that Cassettes which state "Manufactured by EMI Manufacturing (USA)" should use EMI Manufacturing (USA). CDs which state EMI JAX (The predecessor branding) should use EMI Jax.
