The roots of the company were established in 1830 by Robert William Keith (1767–1846) and William Prowse (1801–1886). In the mid 50s the music publishing operations of Keith Prowse & Co. Ltd. are spun off to be sold, with Keith Prowse Music Publishing Co. Ltd. being established for this divestment.
Keith Prowse Music Publishing Co. Ltd. is subsequently acquired in 1955 by the Rediffusion Group, in 1959 the Rediffusion Group merges Peter Maurice Music Co. Ltd. with Keith Prowse Music Publishing Company Ltd. with KPM Music Ltd. (K.P.M. Music Ltd.) subsequently being established as a separate publishing company.
In 1969 Keith Prowse Music Publishing Co. Ltd. and its various subsidiaries (generically known / operating as the K.P.M. Music Publishing Group ) were acquired by Electric & Musical Industries Ltd. (EMI).
In 1972 the ultimate parent EMI Ltd. (EMI) (formerly known as Electric & Musical Industries Ltd.) purchased Affiliated Music Publishers Ltd. (a UK based holding company established in the 50s by Robbins, Feist, Miller and the Francis, Day & Hunter Group), following this acquisition Keith Prowse Music Publishing Co. Ltd (K.P.M. Music Publishing Group) was brought under the control / umbrella of this newly acquired company. Affiliated Music Publishers Ltd. was renamed EMI Music Publishing Ltd. in 1974.
The company is still a direct subsidiary of EMI Music Publishing Ltd. and forms part of the DH Publishing Group. (ultimately owned as of 2018 by the Sony Corporation)
