The label was started in 2001 by Luke Lewis, then chairman of Mercury.
For the next ten years the Universal Music Group subsidiary became the home of singer/songwriter-oriented artists such as Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams, Lyle Lovett and Willie Nelson.
The label's most successful release was the multi-platinum soundtrack, Various - O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Music From The Motion Picture).
Lost Highway officially returned with its first new release since 2012 with Ringo Starr’s Look Up album on Jan. 10, 2025.
