Started in 1983 in Long Eaton near Nottingham, England, by Dave Parsons and others, initially as a vehicle for Splat! (he was the singer) who recorded the first two releases. After Splat! folded, Dave carried on the label.

The label was never a financial success (for a while Dave helped to fund it by working shifts in a biscuit factory) but achieved a degree of critical acclaim. John Peel played many Ron Johnson records on his influential radio programme.

Ron Johnson was responsible for any early Stump release, and Big Flame and A Witness also recorded for the label. The label folded in 1988 as a result of financial problems, but appears to have retained a cult following.
