Danish jazz and blues label founded in 1952 by Karl Emil Knudsen.
Label Code: LC 0356 / LC 00356
Note: do not confuse with the US label Storyville (3)
Knudsen was a pioneer in bringing dixieland jazz to the masses in Denmark. His label, named after the eponymous district in New Orleans, focused on dixieland jazz and especially the 50's and 60's european performers of the genre, like Chris Barber and Papa Bue's Viking Jazz Band. In the beginning, the label mainly licensed recordings, but soon the label started doing own recordings, inspired by the US jazz musicians touring in Europe.
In the early 50's Knudsen teamed up with founder of Jazzhus Montmartre, Anders Dyrup, who had established the Sonet label, to form a mutual outlet company, Dansk Grammofonplade Forlag, later Sonet / Dansk Grammofon A/S. This company in 1955 began cooperating with the Swedish Scandinavian Record Company. In 1963 Knudsen took over Dyrups part of the Danish company.
When Knudsen died in 2003, the label hadn't begun releasing digitally, and with the purpose of that, in 2005 the label was taken over by the music publishing company Edition Wilhelm Hansen.
