Bertelsmann Schallplattenring was founded by Reinhard Mohn on 1 July 1956 as a supplement club label to the Bertelsmann Lesering book sales club.
Since most record companies were reluctant to licence their recordings, Bertelsmann set up their own label Ariola in 1958. Moreover, many pressing plants not being able/willing to press records for the company for contractual reasons, a pressing plant of their own was established as well: Sonopress.
