iv heard a lot of '94 intelligence but there's just something about the releases on this label that make them easily my favourite. The blend of darkness and light is sensational, some real deep moods coming through without them sounding same old and still carrying that heavy amenistic drive. A cut above for me

With the imminent re-release of the three Truper records and some of the Sentinel tracks from Basement, I REALLY REALLY hope some of the VDLs and other tracks from this label also see the light of day again. Stunning tracks that deserve to be enjoyed by all.

Any fans of this label check out the DJExtreme Streetbeats 10'' Mixes on his website for all the Unknown Artists series and more. The absolute definition of deep jungle...

Quality label with just impeccable output.
Some absolute gems from all the big names early in their careers, esp the VDL 10inches. On the Warpath and the Oblivion tunes were the label highlights for me.

I always thought this should have been the label that finally released the MRJ Crazy Day Dreams track.... That's if it was Mr Roger Johnson and not someone else, the rumour mill seems to think it was Peshay and Flytronix?

Basement Phil here, I was really proud of this Basement Records sub label, which I used to launch new artists making DnB in the very early early years through my Company Vinyl Distribution LTD hence the cat numbers on the early 10"s.
Roger Johnson was the new in house engineer at the studio in the Vinyl Distribution building in Reading and was helping Basement move to the new DnB sound. I had met Peshay after his debut release on the mighty Reinforced Label which led to his release on the label. I loved the Criminal Minds aka DJ Halo and Chase 1, releases on White House so when the guys sent me a demo DnB tune I quickly signed it for Street Beats. The other releases were from an artist who we would all eventually know as Photek.
This is how I got to meet Rupert...I heard a track 'System X' on the TelTels label and found out through Ray Keith it was a new artist called Rupert Parkes aka The Truper aka The Sentinel aka Photek. He was making the very sound I was trying to break through whilst the Jungle thing was blowing up LITERALLY!
At that time I had decided to stop distributing Jungle & Rave and concentrate on a new sound that was emerging DnB, when I was trying to sell these new tunes shops used to say "Phil dont like this new stuff but we like you, so we will buy a couple of each to keep you going"
So I arranged to meet Rupert and told him I thought he was extremely talented and the only thing was the production sound was poor so I would like to back him. So I gave him a few thousand pounds so he could sort out his studio, the result? he brought me 12 awesome tunes. All of these were released on these 10" slabs along with tracks by Roger Johnson (Inhouse engineer at Basement Records, MixMag DJ Champ and now with Moby)Peshay & Criminal Mindz.
(1-6) I pressed 5 pure white tests of each & 250 of each with coloured labels. VDL (7 - 10 & SVDL7 &8)10 pure white tests & 250 of each were then printed with artist details. Hence why these are so rare and collectable.
The 12" Label ALSO features Peshay aka the 'Secrets EPs' as well as Source Direct aka Oblivion.
Due to too many commitments at that time I handed the label over to long term friend Donovan Bad Boy Smith to run. Donovan A&R and released (SB012 to SB025)

As a footnote to History, when these 10" EPs were launched Pete Tong said in a MIX MAG interview that Raving was Dead. He went on to say all the talent had left the Rave scene and all that was left wasn't worth talking about as it was in its death throes. The club that proved him wrong was 'Speed', a tiny club in the West End championing Bukem & Fabio. For the first year average crowd would be 100 - 200 people, all the Artists who became the bedrock of the DnB scene we all know and love today. This label was launched to aid that new scene and Basement Records also stopped producing 4/4 Rave and started releasing early tracks by artists such as Photek, Source Direct, Justice, J Magik, Subject 13 to name but a few. The other label also launched to help develop this new sound was Precious Material.

Why hasn't this label got some details yet?! One of the most important labels during the jungle eras peak time, artists such as peshay, source direct, photek....they all released on this label under alter aliases. Some of the finest, most intelligent and beautiful DnB/Jungle came out from this stable. You need these records for your collection, FACT!
