Mechanlizenz was the first Swiss rights society, established in 1923. It was responsible for the licensing of sound carriers.

Copyrights in relation to the public performance of works was handled by GEFA (Gesellschaft für Aufführungsrechte), set up the following year.

In 1980 both institutions were fused under the one roof of Suisa.

Prior to 1923, Swiss artists' copyrights were handled by a agency of French Sacem in Switzerland.

In the last years of its existence, Mechanlizenz was regularly abbreviated +ML+ on releases.
