The latest thrift finds and online purchases. a little diary on where I found the records along with a quick impression upon listening. Some are records I once had or liked back in the day, some I'm seeking out, and some are just what I run across.

  1. Freddie King - Larger Than Life

    7 For Sale from $7.00

Free. Dang it! I thought for sure this year's list would be a carefully curated selection of collectible gems from my wantlist. Well, these were free and in nice condition, so I could hardly pass them up.

  2. Freddie King - All His Hits

    2 For Sale from $6.99

Free. Not bad. Some r&b and some instrumentals help mitigate the blues tedium.

  3. Charlie Musselwhite - Times Gettin' Tougher Than Tough

    32 For Sale from $6.00

Free. I do love me some blues harmonica! No, wait...

  4. No Artist - The Big Sounds Of The Drags!

    11 For Sale from $4.99

Free. Fun once for the stereo effects.
    SOLD FOR 5.00

  5. Astrud Gilberto - I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do

    13 For Sale from $20.00

Another freebie. A nice record of light jazz.

  6. Nazz - Nazz

    22 For Sale from $5.00

eBay There's a lot of variety on this album, which is great, including blues, which is bad; it's a pretty solid record all in all.

  7. The Allman Brothers Band - Eat A Peach

    29 For Sale from $6.00

CA An Allman Brothers record. Yeesh. Well, it was pretty cheap and in nice shape. Maybe I should give it a chance, I thought. I look at the track list when I get it home. It's foreboding: Mountain Jam takes up all of side 2, Mountain Jam 2 takes up all of side 4. How come I can listen to some minimalist type hit a single chord on the piano for half an hour, but start yawning after 2 minutes of this?

  8. Simple Minds - Sons And Fascination

    53 For Sale from $3.10

CA Early Simple Minds album in great shape, but... Yuck.

  9. Galaxie 500 - Today

I bought all three of these from the same dealer on eBay. Naturally, the vinyl is a little rougher than I had hoped, but not so bad that I would return them. I liked these guys back in the day, but I always thought their sound was just a little too gauzy... a little heavy on the treble and reverb, making the songs sound too similar. When I heard the first Luna album, I felt like Dean W had really found the right setting. Still they are enjoyable records.

  10. Galaxie 500 - On Fire

    3 For Sale from $100.00

Again the production, but when they lock into the VU style rave-ups all is forgiven.

  11. X-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents

    65 For Sale from $32.95

Discogs Maybe it's nostalgia, but this sounds great to me after all these years. It's another that I always kind of meant to pick up back then but just didn't get around to it. It's got heavier riffs than I remembered, reminding me of the Pistols a bit.

  12. Kraftwerk - The Man Machine

    3 For Sale from $35.00

Discogs A really nice copy at a decent price, filling a long-time hole in the collection. I'm struck by how this album can sound so minimal and so warm at the same time. Fantastic.

  13. Faust - The Faust Tapes

    109 For Sale from $6.27

eBay 1. Great condition. One of my favorite bands and records of the Krautrock era.

  14. Supersister (2) - Iskander

    20 For Sale from $22.73

eBay 2. Great condition. A change of direction for Supersister toward a more serious approach; that, and the fact that this is a concept album about Alexander the Great lead some to dismiss this album. The thing is, it's mostly instrumental so it's pretty easy to ignore the concept, and while it isn't their best, it's a interesting enough record in it's own right.

  15. Iggy Pop - New Values = Nuevos Valores

    10 For Sale from $10.16

eBay 3. Great condition. Sure, there's a few tracks I could live without, but mostly it's a fun record with a lot of nostalgia value for me.

  16. The Stooges - Rubber Legs

    38 For Sale from $11.36

eBay 4. Not sure how much repeat play this will get, but it's probably better than most collections of this often bootlegged material. Original issue with the 7".

  17. Ringo Starr - Beaucoups Of Blues

    8 For Sale from $13.00

CA1 Really nice copy, but I have to say I don't really care for it much. A country record recorded with Nashville pros. The songs aren't much and I don't think that Ringo's limited vocals do anything to enhance them. "Love Don't Last Long" is pretty cool though.

  18. Bob Dylan - Nashville Skyline

    110 For Sale from $1.95

CA2 I'm pretty fond of this record, but the copy I had was pretty beat. This is a first press that looked near mint in the store but has groove wear that makes for a less than great listen. I'm thinking of getting one of those hats like miners wear with the light for record shopping in dingy old junk stores.

  19. Iron Butterfly - Ball

    41 For Sale from $2.00

CA3 Excellent vinyl, shitty sleeve. At home, I have a copy in the opposite condition. A cheap solution! Too bad it's not a better album. There's something about those backing vocals on "Time of Our Lives" that made it the one thing I really remembered about the album, and I still think that song has a great feel. There's some other groovy instrumental bits sprinkled throughout, but there's also unabashed bids for the pop charts like Lonely Boy that are just awful.

  20. Neil Young - Hawks & Doves

    9 For Sale from $5.35

CA4. Neil capped off the 70's on a high note with Rust Never Sleeps and the then started a string of 80's records that...well, he did get sued for making them. There's evidently some back story to this album. Neil was preoccupied with his newborn son's medical issues and trying to finish out his record contract so he pulled together some songs he'd had for a while and put together a record that still only clocks in at 30 minutes. For all that, I find this record to be better than I expected.

  21. Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow

    9 For Sale from $5.95

CA5 This one has kind of a rough cover, but was pretty cheap and a first press so wtf.

  22. The Smoke (3) - The Smoke

    1 For Sale from $124.95

eBay 1. I've been wanting this for a while, finally got it at a really decent (not cheap tho) price. Really Great light psych. At first the songs seemed a little trite to me, but they burrow into my crusty psyche and do their happy work. Brilliant.

  23. Shoes - Black Vinyl Shoes

    19 For Sale from $10.00

DE. Another batch of records that I really didn't need to buy, but they were all, except one, in NM condition.

  24. Patti Smith - Dream Of Life

    54 For Sale from $8.40

DE2. Beautiful copy. Not a good record at all though. I knew that, of course, but I hadn't heard it since it came out, and had forgotten just how awful it really is.
