Political records very widely and personally interpreted. I'm just listing 7" vinyl here.

  1. Ras Obi - Credit Crunch

    3 For Sale from $6.67

Credit Crunch has a good sound but lyrically simplistic not very poetic.

  2. Junior (2) - Too Late

    89 For Sale from $0.49

A song about domestic violence. Something we have made progress about in the last 20 or 30 years and this record contributed to raising early awareness that violence within the private sphere was not OK. A difficult subject to make into a palatable record.

  3. Eltron John / Eddie C - Ludzie Z Marsa / Słoneczna Promenada

    5 For Sale from $14.09

I'm including this because the music of new immigrant communities needs to be heard and shared. As a second generation post war Polish immigrant who 'lost' my language music is an important connection.
    Very softly 'political' I know...

  4. Congress - 40 Miles

    20 For Sale from $1.27

Not overtly political but need to have representatives of the UK Rave scene here. The scene was a serious challenge to the Law that controls music events - in spite of the music lack of 'content'.

  5. Genesis - Illegal Alien

    68 For Sale from $0.51

Rocks along - pity about the banal chorus “its no fun being an illegal Ali-un”

  6. UB40 - One In Ten / Present Arms In Dub

    110 For Sale from $0.50

"The song title refers to the number 9.6, being the percentage of the local workforce claiming unemployment benefit in the West Midlands in the summer of 1981."

  7. Charlie Livingstone - Get Off Your Knees (Unity)

    2 For Sale from $3.83

Passionately sung and with worthy lyrics - good in context of the Miners Strike of the time, but musically generic. The music doesn't really match the rawness of the subject. pos £5

  8. Madness - Shut Up

    122 For Sale from $0.37

A Town With No Name - the image of the back sleeve of the handcuffs Crime sub-genre .. Shut Up = The song tells a story of a criminal who, despite obvious evidence, tries to convince people he is not guilty. Even though the song is called "Shut Up", the two words do not appear in the lyrics at all. However, they were the final words of an additional verse which was part of an early version of the song.

  9. Pluto Shervington - Ram Goat Liver

    56 For Sale from $1.27

... paradoxical stories of poverty disguised as comedy tunes" Surprised some people by UK charting although they were sung in patois and so the story and social commentary are lost on most of us. Still very musical. see also DAT

  10. Labi Siffre - (Something Inside) So Strong

    50 For Sale from $0.56

An anthemic tune that got adopted by other liberation movements of people suffering from harsh experiences of oppression.

  11. The Isley Brothers - Fight The Power

    20 For Sale from $2.26

1975 - about the same time I also had trouble with the word 'bullshit' on US TV!

  12. Big Country - Just A Shadow

    32 For Sale from $1.03

Big Country is a Scottish rock band formed in Dunfermline, Fife, in 1981. Just a ~Shadow and Winter sky 1985 from the 1984 No1 hit album. Steeltown written about Corby where a lot of Scots had gone to work. The steelworks closed in the early Eighties.

  13. Holly Johnson - Americanos

    161 For Sale from $0.24

a good bass thump 1989 US crit sub group yeah
"Holly perfectly at home as a camp game show host in John Waters-style '50s America, redistributing wealth against a soundtrack of galloping Latin beats and glossily ironic lyrics.

  14. Morrissey - Interesting Drug

    45 For Sale from $1.27

Trouble is, I cannot stand the sound of Morrisseys plaintive voice..
    £5

  15. Au Pairs - It's Obvious

    2 For Sale from $32.05

This is a great musically in its simplicity and lyrics also top AD class, and £5+

  16. Paul Hardcastle - 19

    125 For Sale from $0.44

from record blurb "In WW2 the average age of the combat soldier was 26. In Vietnam he was 19"
So much political music in 1985 - after Punk had worked on the industry.

  17. Redskins - Keep On Keeping On

    11 For Sale from $1.27

The Bosses make us pay for their crisis" cover blurb.

    4 For Sale from $3.35

Not wonderful but interesting... found in the basement of Housemans Books.

  22. The Alarm - Sixty Eight Guns

    71 For Sale from $0.50

I got such a big thumbs down when I played this at MDR recently I'll be wary about including it again although it was part of the original Agit Disco book... maybe you have to have been in S Wales at the time

  23. The Pretty Things - Eve Of Destruction

    20 For Sale from $2.55

I used to go see the Pretties in the Sixties and they were wilder looking and punker than the Stones - but this version doesn't really update or improve the original.

  24. Madness - It Must Be Love

    88 For Sale from $1.28

Labi Siffre song by Madness whao!
