Albums of the Year - Critics' Poll | Rolling Stone (1968-?)

In the February 1, 1969 issue of Rolling Stone, the staff inaugurated a collection of year-end "awards" for albums. Most had cheeky titles like "English Album of the Year" and "American & British Rock and Roll Album of the Year." Over the next several years or so, the albums mentioned in the year-end awards became a way to spread the wealth among the magazine's honorees. (For example, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder were named Artists of the Year in 1974, but neither were on the Best Albums list.) By 1976, Rolling Stone finally assembled a critic's poll of the year's best albums, an annual tradition that has continued to the present day. That same year, it also started a readers' poll.
