Arabic Releases - Pass

It's not uncommon to purchase genuine releases from the Middle East only to find that something is off with the audio. Most commonly, finding that your disc was presumably pressed from an MP3 copy of the audio. I say "presumably" because it's not entirely impossible to master a CD with a 20 kHz brick wall filter. A 16 kHz low-pass on the other hand is almost a guarantee that someone screwed up.

I basically place releases on the "pass" list when they've either got spectral data all the way up to 22.05 kHz, or they are free of audible artifacts that are present in other releases. This is in no way meant to be a review on the audio quality of the master - although I may include that in the comments. The loudness wars made it to Arabic releases some time around the early to mid 2000s, at which point dynamic range became a wayward historical artifact.

Take everything here with a grain of salt and check the individual comments on each item. Seeing one version of a release here does not automatically mean other versions "Fail" unless I've put them on that list. My collection is small and these lists are not meant to be all inclusive.

  1. Hakim = حكيم* - Yaho = يا هوه

    2 For Sale from $10.00

Excellent!!! Sleeper "HDCD" with DR11 once decoded to a padded 24-bit file. It helps that it's a good album too.

  2. Amr Diab - أحلى وأحلى

Good. This release only has pre-gaps on Track 1 on the TOC. All tracks have 2 sec of silence at the end, however, so it's not "gapless." Probably an authoring error. 2nd time I've seen it from Inter Gulf Media.

  3. Amr Diab - علم قلبي = Allem Alby

    1 For Sale from $9.00

Good. DR11, the last Amr Diab album with any DR really. No clipping either, peak levels are in the 80-90% range mostly. Complete art and an American pressed disc.

  4. Amr Diab - شفت الأيام =Shoft Elayam

    1 For Sale from $12.00

Good. No obvious LPF or compression artifacts. Excessive dynamic range compression on some tracks but nothing out of the ordinary. This release only has pre-gaps on Track 1 on the TOC. All tracks have 2 sec of silence at the end, however, so it's not "gapless." Probably an authoring error. Recurring pattern from Inter Gulf Media.

  5. Elissa (3) - احلى دنيا

Good, no censored artwork, no copy control. Tracks have clipped instruments and vocals at some point, but which Elissa record doesn't?

  6. Elissa (3) - تصدق بمين

    1 For Sale from $7.50

Full artwork with no Saudi market censoring. No low-pass filter that would indicate prior MP3 compression. Vocals and bass clip at various points. This release only has pre-gaps on Track 1 on the TOC. All tracks have 2 sec of silence at the end, however, so it's not "gapless." Probably an authoring error.

  7. Elissa (3) - تصدق بمين

Artwork is missing the "credits" and "thank you" pages, as well as any pages that only had English language lyrics. No Saudi market censoring. No low-pass filter that would indicate prior MP3 compression. Vocals and bass clip at various points. Audio is identical to Elissa (3) - تصدق بمين with the exception of track lengths. This release includes consistent 2 sec pre-gaps, the other has the gaps baked into the tracks.

  8. Hisham Abbas* = هشام عباس - Habiby Dah = ... حبيبي ده

Good. This record also has a good DR score.

  9. Nawal Al Zoughbi* - طُول عُمري

Good. DR11 since it's an older CD. No copy control like the reissue.

  10. Nawal El Zoughbi* - Mandam A'Leuk

    Good, restrained "remaster" with DR15.
