Best Psychedelic Rock Bands
Here is a list of my favourite psychedelic rock artists.
Why is my list so big? Because I'm a psychedelic rock fanatic, and I couldn't decide which artists to leave out - it's a bottomless pit.
I tried to arrange the artists in alphabetical order, but once I got above 250, it just got too time consuming, and I got bored (Discogs' paging setup doesn't help).
Trying to define what constitutes psychedelic rock, as distinct from progressive rock, hard rock, garage rock, sunshine pop, bubblegum pop, or any other sub-genre, can be extremely subjective sometimes, so let's not try and split hairs - this is close enough for rock and roll.
If I was forced right this minute to pick my top 10 psych albums, they would probably be:
1 Love - Forever Changes
2 Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
3 Beatles - Revolver
4 Moby Grape - Moby Grape
5 Quicksilver - Happy Trails
6 Pretty Things - SF Sorrow
7 Small Faces - Ogden's Nut Gone Flake
8 Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
9 Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
10 Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow
However, I could probably come up with a completely different top 10 every day for the rest of my life, depending on which albums I'm listening to at the time.
I have not included any post-70's psych bands, because, while there are many good ones, they are not offering anything new. Many of them tend to indulge in long aimless jams. Some neo-psych artists I recommend are Mermen, Bevis Frond, Color Haze, King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard, Wooden Shjips.
I have also excluded Various Artist compilation albums, as there are far too many great ones (Nuggets being the pick of the bunch).
