Bill Schubart Collection

Bill Schubart (b. 1947) is a Vermont author, commentator, and businessman. Born in New York City and raised in Morrisville, VT, Schubart was educated at Phillips Exeter, Kenyon College, and the University Of Vermont (Burlington, U.S.A.). Following his education, Schubart joined with his brother Michael Couture in 1973 to co-found the Vermont-based folk label, Philo, recording studio Earth Audio Techniques (1, 2), publisher Pleiades Music, and production company Resolution, Inc.. Philo was merged into Massachussetts' Rounder Records label in 1982. Schubart lives today in Hinesburg, Vermont. The Philo masters have recently been donated to the Vermont Folklife Center.

Primarily focused on folk and traditional music, the Philo label produced artists including Jean Redpath, Jean Carignan, Mary McCaslin, Philippe Bruneau, artists from Fretless, and later artists like Christine Lavin, Carrie Newcomer, and Nanci Griffith. But the output from Philo is considerably narrower in scope than Schubart's actual personal collection. Characterizing his collection as "classical and primitive music", the 3000-odd releases that comprise the bulk of his non-Philo records range roughly from traditional to operatic to modern/experimental classical (900), Nordic to mid-European to Spanish traditional and secular (100), primitive to arcane to magical (50), French-Canadian and Cajun (200), Asian and Indian and African world music (200), jazz and ambient/new age (200), Soul and Gospel (100), bluegrass and country (250), blues from Chicago and Memphis and delta (200), folk and rock - British and Celtic (700), and more (politically and rebellious, Christmas, children's, comedy, poetry, etc.), etc. Numerous formats in the collection also include 45RPMs, 78RPMs (10", 11" Pathé discs, 1/2 in. spindles from Standard Disc, etc.). And the hope of this list is to glean a bit of the influences that led to Schubart's musical interests as well as the flavor of the proto- or otherwise pre-Philo sound before becoming the label.

Schubart's personal collection provides an interesting peek as an archive with hand-written notes and of course original order and respect des fonds. Writing on covers, for example, can show Schubart's monogram in an era when his collection was first developing. With a stamped address of his time at Phillips Exeter, a digital visitor can determine that this music came from a specific and different era. Connections to Philo, Fretless, and Rounder provide more obvious connections. In terms of the specific order, mis-ordered records (swapped, missing, etc.) may reveal particularly common listens while unopened covers may be recorded either as of lesser interest or alternately of greater significance as when doubles (one opened and one for saving) are identified.

This is a long-running project that provides the archivist's great opportunities to dig into Schubart's vinyl vaults. Keep watching as the collection list grows and expands!
