Norwegian shellac releases on Columbia, in the GN series, from 1934 to 1958. It superseded the DN series.

The series continued on vinyl, and some of the shellac releases were also co-released on vinyl. Please note that this list is intended for the shellac releases only and so the vinyl issues are not eligible for this list.

The GN 5000 series, a jazz series started in 1938 and lasting a few years, is not eligible for this list. I have made a separate list for those.

A guide to the release years for the GN series:

1934: GN 1-27
1935: GN 28-170
1936: GN 171-320
1937: GN 321-479
1938: GN 480-615
1939: GN 616-730
1940: GN 731-790
1941: GN 791-816
1942: GN 817-837
1943: GN 838-848
1944: no releases
1945: GN 849-937
1946: GN 938-984
1947: GN 985-1039
1948: GN 1040-1068
1949: GN 1069-1135
1950: GN 1136-1200
1951: GN 1201-1260
1952: GN 1261-1357
1953: GN 1358-1456
1954: GN 1457-1531
1955: GN 1532-1568
1956: GN 1569-1601
1957: GN 1602-1625
1958: GN 1626-1638

Please note though, that some were released out of order, so use the above as a guide only, especially for releases straddling the "border" between two years.

Note also that Columbia did reissue/repress some of these, so the one you have may not be a 1st pressing and so may not have been released in the year indicated above. Some reissues/repressings may be identified by the label variant:

1. A light green label is used from 1934 to 1938 (up to approximately GN 550).

2. It then changed to a darker green, which was used until 1954 (approx. GN 550 to GN 1480).

3. It changed to a lighter green again in the period 1954-1956 (approx. GN 1480 to GN 1590).

4. The last label variant can be easily recognised from its very different typeface on the word "Columbia", and was used from 1956 to the end of the series in 1958 (approx. GN 1590 to GN 1638).
