Essential prog rock albums, with a broad view of what constitutes progressive rock.

  1. King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King (An Observation By King Crimson)

Probably not truly the first progressive rock album, but the album that galvanized the movement.

  2. King Crimson - In The Wake Of Poseidon

A near mirror image of the first album, but a better album overall.

  3. King Crimson - Lizard

A stunningly innovative and bizarre statement, with many of the leading lights of the London jazz scene as guest musicians.

  4. Yes - Close To The Edge

Probably the definitive progressive rock album, and one of the very best.

  5. Soft Machine - Third

Earlier albums were more rock. Later albums were more jazz. This hits the sweet spot where the Softs were pushing boundaries in multiple directions all at once.

  6. Gentle Giant - Playing The Fool

Included for superior performances of album material.
