You know it's a good year when an album of this calibre is at #2.
Key Tracks: 'Country of Illusion', 'The World Set Free'

  3. The Ocean Blue - Ultramarine

    4 For Sale from $15.54

    Simply fantastic.
Key Tracks: 'Sad Night, Where is Morning?', 'Fast Forward Reverse', 'New York 6am', 'Ground Gives Way'

  4. Burial - Rival Dealer

    3 For Sale from $10.67

Another late entry. Dreamy collage of post-rave realizations. Wonderful.
Key tracks: 'Hiders', 'Come Down to Us'

  5. My Bloody Valentine - m b v

Wait, it's actually good??? Yes, indeed.
Key Tracks: 'she found now', 'only tomorrow', 'new you'

  6. Sigur Rós - Kveikur

    20 For Sale from $11.00

    Stunning return to NOISE.
Key Tracks: 'Brennisteinn', 'Ísjaki', 'Rafstraumur', 'Bláþráður'

  7. Mount Kimbie - Cold Spring Fault Less Youth

    40 For Sale from $3.00

Late entry, but another surprise. Dreamy and melancholy. Originally checked out for the King Krule features, but the whole album is worthwhile.
Key tracks: 'You Took Your Time', 'Meter, Pale, Tone' and 'Made to Stray'

  8. Cloud Boat - Book Of Hours

    Burial meets Fleet Foxes! Awesome!
Key tracks: 'Lions on the Beach', 'Youthern' and 'Pink Grin'

  9. Boards Of Canada - Tomorrow's Harvest

    180 For Sale from $13.79

Eerie and haunting return from downtempo masters.
Key tracks: 'Nothing is Real' and 'Jacquard Causeway'

  10. Laurel Halo - Chance Of Rain

Chain of Rain finds Laurel Halo turning in a challenging, but rewarding, all instrumental album. An improvement in just about every way over 2012's Quarantine.
Key tracks: 'Ainnome' and the moody title track

  11. Andrew Bird - I Want To See Pulaski At Night

    1 For Sale from $16.00

More along the lines of the instrumental loop station sound doodles of the Fingerlings series or Noble Beast, but the one proper song here —the title track— is good enough to deserve being the centerpiece of this release.
Key tracks: 'Logan's Loop/Pulaski at Night', 'Lit from Underneath'

  12. James Blake - Overgrown

    16 For Sale from $3.00

Abstract and catchy. Wonderful night album.
Key tracks: 'I am Sold', 'Digital Lion'

  13. Atoms For Peace (2) - Amok

    33 For Sale from $14.99

Just plain ol' good. Take away the prestige of who's involved in it and you get a darn fine album.
Key Tracks: 'Before Your Very Eyes. . .', 'Stuck Together Pieces', 'Reverse Running'

  14. La Luz (2) - It's Alive

Surf pop sounds from Seattle. Very B-52's. Except with more harmonies. Pretty good stuff, actually. It's very easy to get distracted by the twangy reverb and surf organ sounds of the band, but those sounds wouldn't get very far without great song craft to back them up. And it's there among the fantastic drumming and precise harmonies that you will find something worth going back to every single time. The band's shtick never runs dry, and instead, these ladies seem to find genuine and unique inspiration in a style once deemed kitschy and throwaway. Wonderful stuff.
Key tracks: opener 'Sure as Spring' and the otherworldly 'Call Me in the Day', which bends and melds the surf sound into something modern and altogether new

  15. Juana Molina - Wed 21

    11 For Sale from $54.44

Complete surprise, but wow. What an odd and amazing album.
Key tracks: 'Ay, No Se Ofendan', 'El Oso De La Guarda'

  16. The Appleseed Cast - Illumination Ritual

    7 For Sale from $9.85

Fast tempos, no Aaron. Still decent.
Key Tracks: 'Cathedral Rings', 'Barrier Islands (Do We Remain)', 'North Star Ordination'

  17. Sam Prekop - Pavilion

    1 For Sale from $23.00

Sam doing a mostly instrumental album of short ambient pieces. As he is one of the makers of some world's prettiest music anyway, this thing gets by on pure vibe. Shame it wasn't a wider release.
Key Tracks: track 4, track 15 (no titles listed, sorry)

  18. ChameleonsVox - M + D = 1(8)

    1 For Sale from $26.84

New music from Mark! Very Chameleons-esque. Looking forward to a full length.
Key tracks: 'Heaven', 'Feel the Need'

  19. Kitchens Of Distinction - Folly

Another return from a band that I certainly didn't think would ever make another record. Just like Mazzy and MBV, I'm more surprised not that it came out, but that it's actually really good.
Key tracks: 'Photographing Rain', 'Japan to Jupiter', 'Tiny Moments Tiny Omens'

  20. Mazzy Star - Seasons Of Your Day

    20 For Sale from $17.00

Seventeen years on and still no mistaking their sound for anything other than their own. There's still no one that does it like them, so it's no problem at all that their sound hasn't changed one bit.
Key tracks: 'In the Kingdom', 'California', 'Common Burn'

  21. Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information + Wings Of Love

    20 For Sale from $5.32

    "New" but still great.
Key Tracks: 'Special', 'Black Belt Sheriff', 'Wings of Love'

  22. Travis - Where You Stand

    49 For Sale from $8.00

Simply Travis doing that one thing that they do so well for fourty wonderful minutes.
Key Tracks: 'Moving', 'Reminder', 'Where You Stand', 'Another Guy'

  23. Belle And Sebastian* - The Third Eye Centre

    15 For Sale from $10.00

    Cheating by putting this here.
Key Tracks: so many winners here, not that it really counts on this list anyway
