Hot 97 NY & Power 106 LA (1986-1993)
updated 11 days ago
The dance years of two of the US's prominent Rhythmic Top 40/CHR stations prior to each station's shift to Hip Hop towards the end of 1993: WQHT Hot 97 New York and KPWR Power 96 Los Angeles. Although the year range is 1986-1993, there are also tracks from 1983, 1984, and 1985 (usually electro-funk & proto-freestyle tunes) included as well as post-1993 dance tracks that came out well after the transition to hip hop had been completed. Also included are tracks that were played on Miami's Power 96 WPOW, WIOQ Philadelphia, KMEL, KYLD (then known as KSOL), and now defunct Hot 97.7 in the San Francisco bay area and other radio stations that had a similar format. I did a separate list for B96 Chicago, which adopted a very similar dance-leaning format by the end of 1989.
UPDATE: I added some tracks that were featured in the syndicated Hot Mix Radio Network throughout the 90s (which also contained tracks that came out after 1993) instead of doing another list which contain most of the same songs featured on this list.
The tracks cover from the following genres: Synthpop, Dance-Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, Pop Rap, Booty Bass, House, Techno, Latin Freestyle, New Jack Swing, Garage, Electro-Funk, Euro-dance, Hi-NRG, etc. Songs are listed in random order.
also made a separate list of tracks featured in the mix show sets
