NO WAVE (a deep current)
Using rock culture tools to go far beyond rock culture, and going out there
From No New York compilation to eternity and a larger geography.
No Wave appeared and grew up in the same time as Punk. If there are familiarities, these 2 asethetics are very different in nature. Where Punk could be described (quickly) as minimal accelerated rock'n'roll, the fields of exploration of No Wave are way larger, noisier, messy. At crossroads with non-occidental music, free-jazz, noise, industrial and experimental music, a poetic of the extreme, mavericks of expression.
(From that point of view, The Contortions, Bush Tetras, ESG and their minimal wild funk are connected to No, but are also the more in between and closer to Punk or New Wave things).
This, is a collection of musicians who said NO to everything our narrow minded culture would expect music to be.
This is of course not a top, all of these records are marvels, i've just tryed here to respect a sort of historical timeline

- And the late comers of the 90's to 2000 who have nothing to see with the origins, but whose music clearly have the spririt of this aesthetic
