Brief notes on various recordings as I curate my LP collection. This list was started in December 2017.

  1. 3 For Sale from $6.61

"Three Day Sucker" is off-the-hook jazz funk. I love Buddy's Groove Merchant LP's.

  2. 39 For Sale from $2.99

More great work from Buddy in the 1970s. The whole band is great, but the direct-to-disc mix highlights the keys (including some synth) of Barry Keiner and bass of Tom Warrington. The bass tone is especially rich.

  3. 24 For Sale from $1.00

Straight from the Lido deck of the Love Boat. Sail on baby, sail on!

  4. 36 For Sale from $2.97

Steve Gadd (drums) and Michael Brecker work well together on "Power Play".

  5. 33 For Sale from $2.10

More music from the Lido deck - after the lights go down, the stars come out, and lines start appearing on the mirrored tables. "City Suite (For Folon)" is worth the price of admission. It's hard to go wrong when Steve Gadd and the Brecker Brothers are in your band.

  6. 38 For Sale from $2.96

This LP is an excellent example of how great a vinyl record can sound when produced properly. This album was a common find at Canadian thrift stores in the early 1990s when it was just over a decade old. Biographical details on Dale Jacobs are hard to come by, but he is credited as producer of Toronto band Zon's "Down To Earth" (1979). According to the liner notes on "Cobra" he also wrote scores for film and television. This album has 1970s and 1980s cop TV written all over it. Superb jazz-funk fusion, especially if you like synths. Recognized or not, Jacobs was certainly one of the pioneers of electro-synth jazz.

  7. 14 For Sale from $99.23

This rather cultish LP (which has been re-issued a dozen times in 40 years) swings quite nicely.

  8. 33 For Sale from $3.00

Which one of these is not like the others? With Keef Hartley, Savoy Brown, John Mayall, and Ten Years After all represented, fans of British blues of the day must be wondering why this compilation lacks Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Instead, the producers give us a single track from the amazing Otis Spann - the American blues legend (of Muddy Waters' band) who played piano for the Blues Jam in Chicago, which featured Green's Fleetwood Mac.

  9. 9 For Sale from $3.41

Joe has a great sense of humour. Albums by the Continental Drift (aka "The Drift") are hard to find, but worth searching for. Joe is still around and performing solo shows in Peterborough, Ontario.

  10. 4 For Sale from $2.43

Straight up soul with that distinctive Preston sound.

  11. 40 For Sale from $1.19

Great version of "Baby It's Cold Outside". I love the way Ray sings the line about the roar of the fireplace.

  12. 5 For Sale from $26.99

Just when I thought I had heard every possible version of "The Girl From Ipanema".... But seriously, this is great classic soul from 1966.

  13. 3 For Sale from $31.91

Along with "Green Onions" (1962), this is one of the best instrumental soul albums of all time.

  14. 10 For Sale from $1.43

This is top shelf party music for any Saturday night.

  15. 4 For Sale from $85.00

It did not work out "fine", but at least the music was great! I read recently that Tina Turner renounced her U.S. citizenship to become a citizen of Switzerland, where she has been living for years.

  16. 1 For Sale from $2.22

Another great "cult following" band. This album has an all-star cast that includes Bob Dylan, Dr. John, David Bromberg, and David "Fathead" Newman.

  17. "And When I Die" is timeless for obvious reasons.

  18. 23 For Sale from $4.27

Classic roots reggae pressed in Jamaica.

  19. 97 For Sale from $1.05

Is that really Mike Bloomfield's guitar on "One Good Man"? There is no credit, but it is reported to be him. It sure is perfection.

  20. 152 For Sale from $2.99

Certainly not the best live recording, but it captures Big Brother out in the wilds of San Francisco (at Fillmore Auditorium).

  21. 10 For Sale from $6.00

I love John Till's guitar on "My Baby".

  22. 12 For Sale from $5.93

A magical production by Tony Visconti.

  23. 8 For Sale from $15.99

Great early David Bowie. The opening track, "I'm Not Losing Sleep" reminds me of Petula Clark.
