THE U L T I M A T E Vintage Psych / Prog / Hard Rock / Metal List: A Compendium of Music for Thought, Trips, and Relaxation
Note: This list is a work in progress. There is much work to be done!
The goal of this list is to become a definitive list of all vintage psych, prog, hard rock, metal, jazz rock, blues rock, and heavier folk of the 20th century. I am keeping the parameters open to allow for as much music as possible. I will do my best to alphabetize by artist to improve the reference ability of the list. Multiple releases from an artist will be organized in order of release.
I realize that the Acid Archives and similar publications exist. I’ve read them, and they all leave out releases intentionally for reasons of taste, space, or losing out on recently discovered pieces of music. The majority of enthusiasts do spend time looking for new music, but MISS artist that are assumed to be well known. I find it hard to believe that one could live in any era after the 13th of January, 1969 and not know about Led Zeppelin but that’s not for me to judge. IF IT FITS IT SHIPS.
This list will include all relevant ALBUM LENGTH releases from an artist (singles will be a separate page if I decide to make one). Most releases will be true studio albums. Live albums are always welcome. Compilations added when necessary. if an artist only put out 6 singles, never an album, but a comp of those songs exists I will add it. Artist popularity/obscurity does not matter, all artists eligible will be included. Criticism of the Music will be mostly positive. In some cases, a word of warning to the quality may be give. For example, Never Say Die by Black Sabbath is by many accounts a subpar album. But, I believe it is for the listener to decide, and not including it on the list would be dishonest to the intention of "The Compendium". Some less important releases may be left out until the Compendium is truly nearing completion.
The Cutoff is blurry. The list will mostly focus on 60s and 70s but anything "vintage" will do. In this case, anything recorded before 12/31/2000 is considered vintage. I plan on keeping a similar list of modern music (1/1/2001 through today) as well. There are some albums and artists that need no introduction on this list. I feel that these are still relevant for purposes of a truly complete list.
Commentary will be added to releases progressively. Message me if I make a mistake on any provided information. Even though this is a hobby, all information will be sourced that is stated as fact. Year of release will be according to the master page on discogs. Biographical information will be minimal and most often found on debut releases. Obviously, much of this can be found on discogs pages, but this makes it convenient for those who like to discover.
Eras are as follows:
Proto psych: Pre 1966
Early Psych: 1/1/1966 - 12/31/1967
Peak/Middle Psych: 1/1/68 - 12/31/70
Late Psych: 1/1/71 - 12/31/72
Post Movement Psych: 1/1/73 - 12/31/2000
TLDR: If you can TRIP to it, and its from the previous milenium, it likely belongs on the list.
Happy listening, collecting, and tripping.
