Zappa Reissue Program

The ZFT reissue program in 2012
For better or worse, in the demise of vinyl and all its little idiosyncrasies, the ZFT begun diving into the Vaults in 2012 and initiated a roll-out of 56 remastered CDs of Frank's gems, each numbered on the CD face. I shan't comment further, other than to say anyone snagging a copy should also have the vinyl to hand - otherwise you won't know what you missed, especially the tactile enjoyment and intricacies of cover art and inserts, as opposed to the nano versions.
(A reissue update for 2013. Vinyl reissues are to emerge from June 2013. Likely to be pressed by Pallas.
When available I shall add them in at the foot of each CD reissue)

Any Frank Zappa is better than no Frank Zappa. (I shall add and comment as time allows. PMs are welcome)

I shall add the original from DB, if it exists, directly below the CD reissue - along with a brief scenario and any 'conceptual continuities' to be found (just a few for interest - things may grow in time, as all the issues arrive). All release dates are USA.

Having gained full control over the works of FZ, the ZFT announced and signed this 56-release CD reissue deal with Universal Music Enterprises. The first 12 reissues in 2012 planned to coincide [almost] with Diva's birthday, on 31st July. The entire set of works, from 1966 to 1993, can be 'mail-order purchased' in advance - or monthly-released issues purchased as a set, or singularly.

Chronologically-ordered reissue sets, covering releases from 1966 to 1993. (Issue numbers added, where subbed).
(Since the initial announcement, the list has expanded [still in sets of 12] to include releases up to 2012 - plus vinyl up to 2013)

  3. 32 For Sale from $9.65

    Original US vinyl issue: Verve Records - V6-5005-2 - Jun 27/Jul 1966
Ground-breaking first 'Rock double album' (whilst Dylan's 'Blonde On Blonde' double release hit another market). First issues with the ultra-rare mail-order 'Freak-Map'. Birth of the groupie leitmotif Suzy Creamcheese and Zappa's intriguing "Freak List" of 179 names under "These people have contributed materially in many ways to make our music what it is. Please do not hold it against them".
(Many of whom were my heros as a 'freaking out' teenager of the time).
Originally released as a double and a single [flipback] LP in the UK.

  4. 8 For Sale from $52.00

    USA Vinyl reissue #01 - Zappa Records - ZR 3834-1 - 18 Jun 2013
Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering
Uses the 1987 Sony 3324 digital transfer made by FZ.
When Travers compared the 2006 transfer against FZ's transfer, made in '87 to Sony 3324, the Sony transfer sounded better.
The original "Freak Out!" master is on acetate tape and acetate tape is not heat-treatable. As Travers said, "It is what it is. It's also fragile, acetate tape tends to warp over time and many plays. The tape pack can be less then ideal in the end. So, with this in mind, the decision to use the 1987 digital transfer made sense... As far as the critique of the "brightness" or the mix itself, always remember that Frank DID NOT LIKE the original mix of "Freak Out!". But, historically speaking, it's what people have come to know & love and it is a part of legend. Had we used Frank's remix for CD, we would have come under fire for that! You know how it is".

The sleeve design by Schenkel was created in the first 'studio' on Melrose Avenue, that was once a dental practice - hence the resources for the collage. (also the venue where Wild Man Fischer & TMR art began). The '1348' on the skull is, according to Schenkel, arbitrary and coincidentally 'The Year Of The Plague'.
After art completion Buzz Gardner joined and his name was added as a boxed note. Collins' departure was simply indicated by an 'X' through his pic. The art was then in print stage when Lowell George joined and his name was added to the film separations - hence the noticeable text color change on early-issue gatefold art. (Neither new member features). Schenkel was actually working on this art when the incident of the two hitch-hikers occurred - see The Mothers - The Grand Wazoo - in a 1959 white Jaguar convertible, previously owned by Don Van Vliet and birthday-gifted to Janet Ferguson by FZ.
