Notes

Lotus (Japanese: ロータスの伝説) is a 1974 live album by the American Latin rock band Santana, recorded at the Osaka Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan, Osaka, Japan in July 1973, during their Caravanserai Tour.

On all original vinyl releases up to 1991, track E2 is falsely printed as "Savor". Actually E2 is "Mr. Udo" though all artwork states incorrectly "Savor". This was only corrected on subsequent editions from first 1991 CD issue onwards.

Have the empty Japan Promo box for these CD reissues available. Box has bends in lid. Pix available. Reach out if required.

Loud sounding triple live album. The art inside/inserts are crazy and elaborated as well as the live audience pictures. All in all an art piece if you like the genre, definitely to be owned in original vintage pressing and art.

Over 40 years of listening to many great 'live' albums that have been released over the many ears, I have decided that this album is the cream of the crop.

The music contained in this recording may not be your scene but you have to admit that the acoustics and the dynamics are brilliant, to say the least.

Fortunately for me I have been a solid Santana fan since I first heard his music on the 1969 Woodstock album and I can appreciate his transcendence of music from rock to latin, and from the blues to jazz.

His style of playing the guitar in a recording that lasts over 5 minutes and still holds you captive to the music is phenomenal.

I wish to be buried with this album clutched in my hands across my heart.

A great live organic & emotionally captivating Latin-jazz-rock-funk LP on the edge of fusion & ethno-psychedelia filled w/ excitement innovation progression & quality. The musicianship is on fire on this high intensity statement that comes at you like an unstoppable freight train. Sounds like it wants to be a jazz record that can't help but rock.
A testament to Santana's flawless execution.

This is the definitive version, with a warmer, less shrill sound and better bass definition than the Japanese Mofi, SACD or any other CD version - so shrill and trebly this recording was from the git-go........get one before they're gone !

Honestly, I initially got this because it was a 3-disc set and it looked really interesting. I wanted to make sure I got it before the prices went up for it (like so many SACDs do), and once I got my hands on it, I decided to listen to it all the way through on a surround sound system I've got that just so happens to play SACDs. It proved to be an interesting experience, with the surrounds making it as though I'm actually there in the audience. They weren't heavy on the music, but they did have some reverberation of the music, but especially audience cheering. It's also quite nice to have the bonus tracks not available on any other release, since they help the songs flow seamlessly from one to another.

The tracks vary quite widely, and the music can be... interesting at times. It's not bad, but if you go in and your only experience is tracks like "Black Magic Woman", "Oye como va" or their stuff post mid seventies without listening to some of their other early deep cuts and non-singles, you will be surprised. Is that a good surprise or a bad one? Well, it's really up to your tastes. I've come around to enjoy the whole triple album as one long listening experience rather than just tracks on their own or skipping a few, as it feels like that tends to take away from the entire experience.

On another note, it definitely sounds like it was mastered well. Nothing peaks, nothing is compressed, and everything has a very balanced sound to it. The reproduction of all of the art is also beautiful, the tickets, the booklet, the pictures and all the art; my only nitpick is getting the discs out. It feels like more of a hassle than it should be, but for the accuracy and care put into creating this whole package, it's excusable.

This definitely feels like a "Complete Edition". I'd argue that it is the definitive edition, above any other release. I do feel bad for those of you reading this in the future and the prices for this everywhere are quite high like early Sony SACDs or other "valuable" releases. This is a worthwhile purchase, but don't let yourself get ripped off. The OBI and the sticker on the back of the sleeve DOES say 8,000 yen.

I just want to echo what rasputin_rarities said, this is a landmark in Hard Rock/Fusion
A quadraphonic triple live album with a mix to die for, if only every band had one of these in their discography.

I mention the mix as a lot of official live albums tend to play it safe and and mix the lead guitar down.
Its an eternal story, fans wait for the official release of a much loved bootleg only to find that the official version is sanitised.. and remixed <cough> Bowie <Cough>

Carlos' guitar sound is absolutely brutal and its exhilaratingly, refreshingly loud and upfront. On top of that
Disc 1 has some great distorted electric piano (like Chic Corea's contributions to Miles at Filmore) adding even more attack
