Raw Material is definitely not the album you would recommend anyone unfamiliar with T21. This live recording is both raw and pre-cooked (re-hashed some would say). Indeed, if you can seperate the live elements (guitar, voice, bass) from the programmed rhythms and synths (dull and mechanic), you can but be disappointed. La Fête Triste and West Wind (save for the spoken poetry over it) sound as if somebody pressed the CD player's button. Somehow, Phillipe's voice is delighful and emotional and the guitars impressive. You just can't miss the titles spoken in a French accent as an introduction to each track, before powerful renditions of The Last Song, A Dirge for Love or Il se noie. But exquisite moments are too few, and ten tracks in all for roughly 46 minutes, that's a bit short.
But since it is a rare recording, you can cherish it as a faithful memory of the band onstage in those days of well-deserved recognition.
