referencing On Play Patterns (7", Single, White) DIS 132V
April 2002 Dischord Records single pre-released in anticipation of Q & Not U's landmark Different Damage LP (Oct. 2002).
Ten Thousand Animal Calls is a different song and not a proto-interpretation of So Many Animal Calls, though the band mentioned it serves as a 'lyrical sequel'. The A side of this single is the only place this song appears on in the discography of the band, while the B-side provides an earlier version of Soft Pyramids than what would eventually be the debut track from Different Damage.
Comparing Soft Pyramids, the overall production is slightly less refined, and the weird/awkward echoing stick clicks in the middle sound even more beautifully awkward here than they would on the LP. The sleeve photography is worth mentioning as well, featuring the now three-piece band standing and sitting in the National Gallery of Art in DC.
