The Kinks – The Kinks Greatest Hits!

Well Respected Man and Who’ll Be the Next in Line are drenched in vocal reverb leading to believe these are different mixes.

Very muddy sound on this pressing. Not the one to buy if you're looking for a Kinks best of that sounds good.

Mono mix is so essential for this release. The Stereo versions are swimming in echo/reverb and are nearly unlistenable IMO. Get this one, you'll be happy.

The mono version of this album sounds so much better than that awful electronically reprocessed 'stereo' pressing. The music hits so much harder, more crunch, punch, and kick. My copy looks rough, but side one plays with light surface noise and one skip, while side two is considerably worse for the wear.

Ten songs and about 25 minutes of essential early Kinks, but get the mono if you can find it. This "stereo" mix is drenched in reverb, and things reach a nadir on "Who'll Be The Next In Line". Great selection of tunes though, including non-hit "Something Better Beginning". My copy plays really nice, with almost no surface noise, shame about the fake stereo.

I have this release, and it appears Allied Record Corp. in Canada got a stereo master from Reprise, and did a mono fold-down from that. Even though it's designated mono, it's still drenched in reverb like the stereo. Meanwhile, according to various Kinks fans I've heard from, the U.S. mono does not have the extra reverb.

It's not dissimilar to Allied's botched mono Canadian pressing of The Kinks' Something Else, which is clearly a fold-down (reverb, out-of-phase vocals, stereo version of Tin Soldier Man with the different intro), with the exception of a few tracks which are true mono from the single mixes.

The stereo mix has a lot of reverb added, especially on the guitars, which kind of pushes them pretty far back in the mix. Still, you can’t really mess up this great collection of early Ray Davies songs played so fabulously by The Kinks.

I'm not sure which is worse, the overdose of echo or the fake stereo, but its value as a novelty of its time cannot be ignored.

Worst sounding CD I've ever heard in my life.
I have the original "reel to reel" of this album and this CD is an embarrassment compared to that tape. Too much treble no bass. The bass has completely disappeared from this recording. I highly do not recommend it.

Would anyone know if these are the actual US reverbed mixes? Is Stereo portion re-channeled Stereo just like the US LP??
