- Searching for a Land is sung in English and was originally a double-LP, with the second half recorded live. It’s all here on a single CD, and although the album is disjointed, there’s at least one album’s worth of good material.
- from my Italian Progressive Rock reissue explosion Part 2 feature in Audion 23 (Nov.1992)
SEARCHING FOR A LAND (a 75 minute double, also available on a single CD) contains an extremely wide range of styles, yet is all distinctively New Trolls music, their unique stamp of beautifully crafted song (English lyrics here too!), richly textured and aptly dynamic rock music, featuring lots of keyboards, flute, guitar of Hendrixy dexterity, every track a fresh invigorating breath full of delights and surprises. Such is the case that no well-known British or American bands ever got close to this sort of music, maybe Deep Purple hinted at it during their early more adventurous days, Jody Grind got closer, but the Italians were certainly the masters of fusing classical rock with energy and invention to create something new, and twenty years on it's still invigorating. Culminating in the astounding 17½ minute Living Here, with enough organ, guitar pyrotechnics and ecstatic furious energy to dazzle anyone. - The beautiful gatefold cover with two other flip of this album by New Trolls was designed by the Italian painter Alberto Longoni, born in Milan on August 24, 1921.
An eclectic artist, self-taught, began working in 1935 performing etchings, graffiti, paintings, creating multiple, ceramics, sculptures. Then, he went on to write books and doing illustrations. He has collaborated architecture of gardens, with Italian and foreign magazines and illustrated album covers making them more valuable thanks to his artistic contribution. - Edited 13 years agoThis was New Trolls followup to Concerto Grosso per 1. The band brought in new bassist Frank Laugelli and keyboardist Maurizio Salvi. The original LP came with a flap you fold out to gain access to the two discs inside. It's a double album set, one studio, consisting of largely acoustic-based material, and the second disc, recorded live is often full-out-hard rock in the Sabbath, Purple, and Zeppelin vein. All the songs are sung in English and was thought of as a commercial disappointment in Italy. I also have to admit this might not be their strongest album. You can already see schisms in the band that was to tear them apart by 1973. Vittorio De Scalzi preferred a more prog direction while Nico Di Palo preferred a heavy rock direction, and this schizophrenic two disc bears that out to every listener. The first disc sounds like Vittorio De Scalzi's show. Certainly Nico Di Palo sings some of the cuts, but it don't have his heavy guitar playing. "Searching" and "Percival" are nice acoustic piece, the latter featuring Nico's high pitched vocals. "In Saint Peter's Day" is a classically-influenced prog ballad, with Maurizio Salvi providing piano and the Eminent 310 (organ that sounds like a string synth, like what's used on Semiramis' Dedicato a Frazz, the Sensations' Fix albums, and of course Jean Michel Jarre). "A Land to Live, a Land to Die" has more of a bluesy feel, but I really like those spacy organs. "To Edith" could almost pass for a Led Zeppelin song circa Zeppelin II. It's still not that heavy, but Nico Di Palo attempts his best Robert Plant, but for some reason can't get some of those high notes. Now on to the next disc. Some people believe this is a studio recording with audience cheers placed in. The fact the album makes no mention what venue this disc was recorded live doesn't help matters any. You'll never hear a more overexcited crowd this side of 1964-era Beatlemania. The only difference is you won't find screaming 12 year old girls here, but older guys (that is, in their 20s) cheering. "Intro" is a fantastic instrumental piece with nice jazzy arrangements. "Bright Lights" really cracks me up. Super heavy track with Nico Di Palo trying shrieking on the lines of Rob Halford (and this is before Judas Priest had any albums out). I can't get over that! Plus Maurizio Salvi then proceeds to give a great synth solo. "Muddy Madelein" is Purple territory, sounding like something off Machine Head, complete with Ian Gillan-like vocals (that is Gillan when he's not shrieking). "Lying Here" is more heavy prog than anything. Starts off rather gentle, but there's some very heavy passages, some ELP-like organ, some off-the-wall guitar solos. Personally I find this an underrated album, although admittedly a bit uneven, I find plenty of stuff to enjoy here.
