Sweet Exorcist, moving away from Warp Records, brings out THE SPIRIT GUIDE TO LOW TECH, starting with the mellow "Part of the Scene." And true it its name, "African" samples some sub-Saharan voices for a subdued house track, perhaps following the lead of Deep Forest, whose "Sweet Lullaby" came out two years before ("What It Is" has more of a tribal rhythm), where "Feel Your Hands" definitely derives from Chicago house. "Nice" slides down easily, with a touch of funk, whereas "We Are About to Funk" has little funk to speak of, but plenty of electro groove. For those wanting more bleep techno, "Acid" is there for your enjoyment, and for those who like blues samples, "Swing" introduces one halfway through. "Jazz" adds some brightness, if not necessarily jazz, and "Scat" goes to Brazil for its sample. And "Ghettos of the Mind" plays were a vocal sample, transforming it into a swarm of sound to accompany the mellow vibe of the track itself. Let your spirit follow!
