Jerry Harrison – The Red And The Black

Funnily, 'Things Fall Appart' might have influenced Nacht Und Nebel 'Beats Of Love', produced two years later. At least, the funky groove and mixing (frontal voice, backed sound, looped synth, wavy guitars) reminds it... As the production of the album reveals secret ingredients of what the 'new wave' period was at this time, from Hacienda to New-York: psychedelic, slow-mo infused, funkily built, bubbling vocals and groovin' backs. The best of it. Haunted voices, haunted humans? No disco. When the best clique decides to stop, break and create a singular experimental 'pop' album, it works... As result, an unknown LP full of pleasure, liberty, warmness and perfection in every aspects as the Talking Heads reached with 'Remain In Light' one year before or Crimson did with 'Beat' one year after. 11/10.

ESSENTIAL. I've always loved this album, and have owned it on various formats over the years, including the original Vinyl. But now we have this, and it's simply essential even if you already own a copy of the album proper. That's due to the instrumental album included. The second album offers up remixes of album tracks with (most) of the vocals removed. It's a Godsend on a record as densely mixed as this.

The vinyl is flat, and silent. Only disappointment is the cover where they simply reproduced the original inner sleeve in the gatefold. There is a paper insert of one page which includes a brief comment from Harrison on the revisit.

All in all, this is simply a must have release on RSD. Perhaps we'll get Casual Gods at some point too? We can only hope.

It is insane how under the radar this release is. Grab this for these low prices people, this is a killer package. Sounds fantastic. If you like Remain In Light or Fear of Music, this is a no brainer!

The CD releases of this album fetches ridicules prices, obviously because there is a big demand for the CD of it. So what does the record company do in 2023..? They re-release it on vinyl... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Very 'Talking Heads'ish sound, which equates to: It's an excellent album.

*** noteworthy. While Talking Head Jerry released some albums under the Casual Gods moniker, this was apparently the only one under his name alone...the "new wave" genre listed here at this time (3/2019) not really capturing the sounds, funk was clearly what he was chasing after, for the most part at least, what you'd expect from an album with Nona Hendryx and Bernie Worrell...Adrian Belew mostly offering funky licks...funky rhythm section. Varied set to be sure, from irritating to enjoyable... the stand-out cuts make this a worthwhile listen for fans of the Heads.

There are some different variations stamped and etched on the runout-zone. I`ve got:
Side A: R/S Alsdorf 99519 A (stamped) SRK-1-3631 GER-1-A Ø (etched)
Side B: R/S Alsdorf 99519 B2 (Stamped) SRK-2-3631 GER-2 -B²- Ø (etched).

The two best tracks are "Things Fall Apart" and "Worlds In Collision" these are grade A Talking Heads-esque tracks. Just buy those two songs. The rest is only of interest for curiosity's sake.
