Heart – Bad Animals

Own Heart's first three releases on vinyl. All are excellent. That said, Dream Boat Annie is my favorite album from them, with Bad Animals a close second. True, classic American rock.

Crystal clear sound and deep warm bass. Silent no hiss pressing. Sound just like you would expect from 80s Hifi high budget album

These are those late '80s hits from Heart that dominated MTV. I believe hairspray and reverb were directly proportional in these days, there's way too much of both.

Mine's a pretty scratchy copy with some surface noise. Bummer because the songs are very nice.

Overall a good pressing but I think it's lacking in Bass slightly but lacking in treble a lot. Had to tweak my amp to suit. But sounds great after a few adjustments. The synths sound great though...

This album finds Heart at the peak of their "hair metal" era. The highlight of Bad Animals is Ann Wilson's voice, and a number of tracks on this album are examples of the finest her voice has ever sounded: Alone, Wait for An Answer, the title cut, and I Want You So Bad are all clinics in Ms. Wilson's 5 octave range. There hasn't been an album before or since where her voice has sounded better. On the downside, this collection is probably the mellowest in Heart's entire catalog. When you take the 'metal' out of 'hair metal' you're just left with hair and the Wilson's had lots of it in 1987. There are very few heavy moments on Bad Animials: Who Will You Run To, There's the Girl, You Ain't so Tough, and Easy Target have the potential to be great rockers but all of them seem to be running only 3 cylinders by focusing more on the keyboards that the guitar work. Only on the title cut does the band cut loose and show their metal side (and to this day I consider this cut to be one of the best in Heart's entire catalog). Overall, this is a very strong album and a great listen due to the vocal acrobatics of Ann Wilson. But if you're looking for the heavier, harder, more metallic side of this Heart era you'd be better off skipping this one and going for the 1985 self-titled album or 1990's Brigade. Better yet, if you are looking for Heart at it's absolute hard rock best without the 80's overproduction seek out 2004's Jupiters Darling or 2012's Fanatic both of which are more organic, darker, and far heavier.
