Ten years after its publication, on 31 December 2005, the album "Rose Clouds of Holocaust" was indexed by the German Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons (''Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Medien'' or BPjM). Initially the album was put on list B, but the indexing was later defused so that the album is now on List A.

I believe this to be Death in June's best album and is in my top 5 favorite albums of all time. I recommend it to anyone interested in Death in June or the so-called "dark wave" often credited to have been started by Joy Division. While DIJ began in that dark, postpunk arena, this album is well removed from that tradition and firmly planted in a new one. It pains me to see that Germany has offically censored this album as being harmful to young people. I was listening to it at the age of 18! And while it evokes images of world war atrocity and crime, it juxtaposes it to offer a world of beauty out of ugliness. It seems that the officials in Germany totally missed the point, and, ironically, let it be gobbled up by its authoritative machinery. It is not a piece of national socialist propoganda. It is an artistic masterpiece which has transformed postpunk and historical darkness into a complex and enigmatic musical landscape. It is folk music for the dispossessed, a dream that never quite turns into a nightmare and leaves one feeling more at peace for having heard it. It means so much to me that I paid $136.00 to own it on limited edition pink vinyl! It is by far the most I have ever spent on a record.
